Top senior scholar-athletes honored In keeping with tradition, Mercyhurst annually honors two seniors, one male and one female, with its Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. This year, Chloe McQuestion and Thomas Zacharyasz got the nod for exemplifying the best characteristics of a student-athlete. McQuestion, a Buffalo native, graduated in May with a degree in biochemistry and is enrolled in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Buffalo. She closed out her Mercyhurst Softball career, playing four seasons for the Lakers while helping them earn their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2022. In his football career, Zacharyasz played in 26 games and recorded 128 tackles, with 59 of them being solo tackles. In 2021, he played in all 11 games while leading the team in tackles with 107. The Strongsville, Ohio, native returns to the gridiron this fall in his final year of eligibility. He will earn his bachelor’s in Exercise Science and master’s in Secondary Education in 2023 when he graduates from the university’s 4+1 program, where he maintains a 3.8 GPA.

Longtime Golf Coach Ron Coleman retires After a decade as the Men’s and Women’s Golf coach at Mercyhurst, Ron Coleman announced his retirement in May. “It has been an honor to be the head coach of Mercyhurst Golf for the past 10 years but, more than that, Mercyhurst has been such a huge part of my life, and it has made a huge impact on me,” Coleman said. “To all the student-athletes who have joined the Mercyhurst family, thank you; every day you amazed me more and more.” Under Coleman, the men’s team made the NCAA Tournament six of the past seven years including 2022. In his final PSAC Championship with the men in the fall of 2021, the Lakers took third, while three of the five starters finished in the top 15. On the women’s side, Coleman and the Lakers brought home runner-up trophies in each of the past three seasons from the PSAC Championships. As individuals, four of the starting five finished in the top 20.
Mercyhurst netminder steps onto world stage
Senior Ena Nystrøm made history this year competing for her native Norway at the IIHF World Championships in France. Nystrøm, who served as primary goaltender for Mercyhurst Women’s Hockey this past year, served as the No. 1 option at goaltender for the Norwegian Women’s National Team. She started all four games and led Norway to wins over the Netherlands and Slovakia while finishing the

tournament with a .933 save percentage and a 2.52 goals-allowed average. The team finished second in the division after a loss to France in their final game, ultimately giving them a 12th- place finish for the World Championships.
