A WAY up in the ice and snow Lives Santa Claus, we hear. He knows all that we see and do; His records children fear! At Christmastime, down from the sky He drives his reindeer fleet, His pack and sleigh are laden by Rewards for conduct “ sweet.” He comes so swift and secretly In twinkling of an eye, Unless we watch and wait for him, We ne’er his form espy. Delightful legend this, we say, And dear to childhood’s heart, For Santa is their warmest friend If they will do their part. They long for him and dream of him And strive to please him, too; They open wide their hearts to him— He prompts in all they do! O what has happened in our homes That pagan Santa’s face At Christmastime should supersede The Christ Child’s rightful place? Have we enthroned another god In childhood’s tender heart? Have grown-ups from the “ GIVER OF ALL GIFTS” sought joys apart? And can it be that dazzling lights And tinsel, wreath, and bells
Have dimmed the light of Bethl’em’s Star? The “ Great Good News” it tells? Let us, this blessed season, stress That wond’rous guiding star, The seeking shepherds, heavenly choir, The Magi with their hearts afire As on they journeyed far, The gifts they brought the New-Born King In lowly manger stall, The joy that ’round the world should ring As on our knees we fall! Let thankful hearts our voices raise! In mighty anthems sound His praise! Let gifts to Him and in His Name Prove gratitude for Calvary’s shame And for redemption rich and free He paid in full for you and me! This is His Birthday, not St. Nick’s! Let’s never truth and fancy mix! Let’s worship Him with humble hearts, And childhood’s mind impress That life’s true joys all come from Him. There can no other bless! Let’s watch and wait for Him to come, Our Friend and Saviour dear, Then—Christmas light from Heav’n’s great dome Will shine throughout the year!
