The Work And The Workers (Continued from Page 17) During this time they cost the Mormon Church nothing but are supported by friends and relatives. Ground has been broken for a new Mormon Temple in Los Angeles to cost far more than the Temple in Salt Lake City. In this Temple too will be per formed the secret rites of the Mormon religion. Don’t Throw Cards Away A note from Mildred Livingston of the Orinoco River Mission reveals that used greeting cards are a very great aid to evangelism in Venezuela. The plan is to take these colorful cards, paste Scrip ture verses upon them and use them for attractive gifts for children. Those hav ing cards please send them c/o Mrs. Grace L. Brodie, Church of the Open Door, 6th & Hope Sts., Los Angeles 17. Bibles for West Point Recently the American Tract Society made its 82nd Annual Presentation of specially-bound copies of the Bible to 660 fourth classmen at West Point. The presentation was made by Henry G. Perry, Executive Secretary of the or ganization, with Dr. Frank E. Gaebelein, vice-president, bringing the message. 1.1% of all cancer cases were lung can cers. That figure rose to 8.3% in 1948 and Dr. Ochsner predicts that because of current heavy smoking this percent age will have risen to 18% by 1970. Eight to One The American people are spending more than eight times as much on their liquor as on their churches, according to figures recently compiled from govern ment sources by the Methodist Board of Temperance. The expenditures on alco holic beverages amounted to nearly 2% times the amount spent on all private welfare activities, education and scien tific research combined. The figures show that a total of nearly nine millions of dollars a year go for liquor while one million dollars a year maintains the en tire expenditures of all religious bodies including home and foreign missions.
