Commonplace Spring 2025, Volume I, Issue I

A Random Poem That Is Only Part of the Story but at Least Mostly True By Edward Gold I’ve had the great good fortune to share in the action and the passion of my time. The best of times and the worst of times. I saw JFK get shot. Over and over. I saw Oswald get shot. Over and over. College was great because I learned so much about protest marches, plays, and films because I spent all of my time marching in protests, attending plays, and watching films. This last sentence is not a good example of parallel structure. I marched with Dr. King. True. And then saw him get shot over and over. Then Bobby, over and over. Then I went to visit Medgar’s grave. I wrecked my ’68 Mustang when I ran off the road on the Baltimore-Washington Expressway on my way back to college, rolling down a hill before knocking over a pine tree. I didn’t kill my girlfriend.
