Commonplace Spring 2025, Volume I, Issue I

Happiness is so ethereal. Sorrow is so ubiquitous. And time is so short. Almost as short as our attention spans. And, although we accept some truths to be self-evident, Time can get in the way of hope. I will not see the ending, the final outcome. But I do experience joy. I also get to see all the reasons for hopelessness. Despair. So, what’s to be done? I look up at my classroom wall, and I am reminded:

Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can. - Arthur Ashe And then I hear: We gotta do something! - Barack Obama And then I remember:

Begin again. Fail again. Try again. Fail better. - Samuel Beckett

My last words are from Eddie Galude, Jr, channeling James Baldwin: What are we to do tomorrow? We get up and begin again.
