by our guests the day of the party, and I still follow that practice with my own kids. It was all about the celebration. Looking back now I wonder why I love to revisit those birthday parties from my past. Our family is different today, spread out throughout the world. We do not gather around a table filled with food and drinks, but we have the memory of being together once, squeezed into a tight hot apartment toasting to good health and everlasting love with my grandpa’s samogon , savoring my mom’s plum cake and dreaming of a better tomorrow. Those birthdays are the guiding compass from our younger selves to navigate life with joy while cherishing the present moment. They are the beacon to always remember the rich simplicity of joy, connection, and gratitude in our shared meal. I cherish that gift.
