Commonplace Spring 2025, Volume I, Issue I

A plea By Tom Meyer

I urge you to listen, to love, to open your heart to the pain, the sadness, the grief, the loss, and the possibility of unfurling spring's soft yellowed pink leaves. I urge you to remember the tar blisters, marking walking miles; to lean into nightmares before they escape still warm pillows and waft through cracked windows.

I dare you to imagine, to hope, to reach for mangos, to finger avocados, and to yield to creek’s bold cold splash. Believe again in sunflowers, fireflies and black beans. Let the bellowing breeze from the cello’s chords embrace your worries.

Tom Meyer found inspiration for “A Plea” when listening to Yo-Yo Ma accompanying Angelique Kidjo singing “Blewu" in an online HVWP Community Writing session during the COVID shutdown in Spring 2020.
