iron. (W ind the wire closely around the smallest spike from one end to the other. Connect one end of the wire which has been wound around the spike to the negative terminal of one battery and the other end of the wire to the positive terminal of the other battery. Connect the remaining posi tive and negative terminals to each other with a wire. Wrap a piece of white paper around both batteries and place a red cross on it. Hide the batteries behind a cardboard. Cover the windings on the spike with white adhesive tape.) Lesson: Which one of these nails do you think is the stronger? “The large one.” In one way the large one is the stronger, but in another way it is not. Do you think it would be possible for this spike to lift anything? It has no magnetic power. I want you to notice carefully this smaller spike. See, it has a white covering, which reminds me of the righteousness of Christ with which Christians are clothed. When it moves over these pieces of iron, they jump to meet it and it easily lifts them. The reason for its being stronger than the larger spike is that it is connected with an unseen power. Back of this cardboard there are two bat teries, which represent Christ and His power. In looking at this strong spike, I am re minded of Deborah, the woman who was a great judge in Israel. There were men who lived in her day who were stronger physi cally, but none stronger than she as a leader. What do you think made her strong? The secret of her strength was in the fact that she was connected with an unseen power. She had a mighty faith in God. She could bear burdens that were too heavy for human strength. Now I am going to disconnect one wire from a battery, and I will show you what happens. The spike is as weak as its larger brother. It drops its load and cannot again lift it. You and I, too, will be weak if we do not keep constantly in touch with Christ. This makes us think of what the Apostle Paul said: “ I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Phil. 4:13).

to do, very often the Israelites had just driven the enemy back a little way and had settled down beside them- After a while, the Israelites began doing the same things that these heathen people were doing; they even worshiped their idols instead of the living God. When they did this, God had to punish them by letting their enemies take some of them captive. Then the people would feel sorry that they had sinned, and they would promise to do better, and God would send them a deliverer. This time it was a woman, and her name was Deborah. Lesson Story: Deborah was called a judge. This was the name given to the deliverer and ruler of the children of Israel. The people had done evil in the sight of the Lord, and God had let their enemy, the king of Canaan, hold them conquered for twenty years. Then the people were sorry for their sins and cried to God to deliver them. So Deborah called Barak, the head of the army, and gave him the message which she had received from God. She told him to take ten thousand men and go to Mount Tabor and the Lord would send Sisera, the captain of the Canaanite army, arid his chariots to him and would deliver Sisera info Barak’s hands. Barak was afraid. He didn’t see how he and his men could conquer this host, and he said to Deborah; “ If thou wilt go with me, then I will go.” So Deborah went with him, and the story tells us of how God delivered Sisera into Barak’s hands in a wonderful way and how the enemy fled before him and his men. Then Deborah thanked God for the deliverance and sang to Him a song of praise.

JULY. 24, 1938 GIDEON: FOLLOWING GOD’S PLAN J udges 6:1 to 8:35

Judges 7:4 And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that o f whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go. 5 So he brought down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself;

likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink. 6 j And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred m en: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water. 7 And the LORD said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place. 15 And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling o f the dream, and the interpretation
