and brightly. Let us turn on the other and see what happens. A flash! These two electric cords remind me of two kinds of people. Some, like the first, re member the words of Christ and let their light shine steadily. Others may shine more brightly for a very short time and then go out entirely, just like the second bulb. It is now cold and dark. Gideon was a great man, not because he was stronger physically than many of his friends, but because he was stronger spir itually, and let his light shine steadily for God. Gideon could let his light shine as long as he kept in constant touch with God. God is looking for boys and girls and men and women today who will remain true to Him under all circumstances and who will let their light shine constantly. said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him. 21 But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house. S trength and W eakness V iewed P sychically (14:5, 6) T HE Holy Spirit, in writing the his tory of Old Testament worthies* does not hesitate to record their short comings; their worst faults and most terri ble failures are truthfully written. As we read the Bible we discover that even the great leaders of Old Testament times were men and women o f like passions with our selves. But on the other hand, when the Holy Spirit refers to these same men and women in the New Testament, He presents only their successes, with the failures omit ted. Only by the exercise of faith were they able to accomplish the things that were pleasing to the Lord. The great “ faith chapter,” Hebrews 11, should always be consulted when one is reading of Old Testament characters. In that listing we find that even Samson, though his history is anything but glorious, was named as a man of faith. Though Samson was a Nazarite, he al lowed the appetites of his soul to dominate him. He appears to have been peculiarly afflicted with fleshly desires (cf. vs. 1-4). While he had great physical strength, he was weak psychically, so that his soul took his body under control and misused that body. He could destroy a lion with his hands, but could not control his soul. In this realm1many a man is overcome today; the desires of the soul become so strong that they control the man, and his body is used for other purposes than those for which it was given. There is a hint of this tendency in our Lord’s words: “ If any man

They look much the same outward ly, but the insides are different. People are different in looks and in the way they act, and so are these bulbs. JULY 31, 1938 SAMSON: STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS J udges , C hapters 13 to 16

Judges 14:5 Then went Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath, and came to the vineyards of Timnath: and, behold, a young lion roared against him. 6 And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done. 15:11 Then three thousand men of Judah went to the top o f the rock Etam, and said to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? what is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them. 12 And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And Samson said unto them, Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me yourselves. 13 And they spake unto him, saying, N o; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand: but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock. 14 And when he came unto Lehi, the Philis tines shouted against him : and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands. 16:15 And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? Thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth. 16 And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death; 17 That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother’s wom b; if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man. 18 And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath showed me all his heart. Then the lords o f the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand. 19 And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks o f his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. 20 And she said, the Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out o f his sleep, and BLACKBOARD LESSON 7/31/36 "WITH THE. JOUJ OF On -R6S G / J / S uhue . i su o in « Tw ousonD m e rr O JUDGES li 16 A- ■¿UT TU E PHILISTineS TOOK. HI ITT juogesi 6*
