Planning the layout of your yard
Give new life to your driveway Have you just bought a new house and the landscaping needs to be done from scratch? The Àrst thing to do in this situation is to make a list of exactly what you want. On the other hand, if you want to redesign an existing yard, the Àrst step is to identify the plants you wish to keep. Don’t limit yourself by letting existing elements dictate the style of your new yard. Rather, integrate these elements into your design by incorporating them into an efÀcient network of garden paths. Many heads are always better than one, so ask your family what they would like to see in their new yard. You probably won’t be able to include all their ideas, but identifying priorities will ensure that nothing important is forgotten and unnecessary expenses will be avoided. For example, if you are planning to put a Áowerbed in one particular spot, be sure that it isn’t where you’ll want to install a pool a few years from now. Moving all those plants later on will be a lot of hard work! Other projects might include leaving space for hanging out the laundry (forward-thinking for a green backyard), a pond, garden, rockery, or herb garden, as well as a corner for relaxing and entertaining. When the time comes to start work, keep in mind your priorities. The space you have at your disposal as well as your budget may limit what you can include. Although some driveways are made of concrete, asphalt is much more common because it is so much cheaper. And it is here that the ravages caused by our severe climate can be the most visible. As with anti-rust treatments for cars, the best solution remains preventive maintenance. It is recommended to apply a seal coating to asphalt every three years. This coating fills any small cracks or holes, preventing water from penetrating under the surface, especially dur- ing periods of frost and thaw. However, before starting that stage of the work, the driveway should be cleaned with a pressure washer, adding some special detergent to the water for a better degreasing action. If the passing of the seasons has had time to cause damage, any holes and cracks must be repaired. The problem of cracks is easily solved with specially designed asphalt crack-filler. To repair a hole, the surface should first be brushed clean and then washed down with a hose. Fill the hole with asphalt patch, taking care to use a little more than necessary. Heat this with a dual heat gun and then, using a trowel, tamp it down level with the surrounding area. Finally flatten everything with a brick or a piece of wood.
