LESSONS IN THE DESERT In Utah and Arizona, My Kids Learned What You Can’t Learn in Class
Recently, my family returned from an end- of-summer trip to Utah and Arizona. I texted some of my favorite pictures to my mom. She responded, “Time to stop playing! Those kids need to be studying.” “They are studying,” I said, sending her a picture of the ancient Native American petroglyphs. “This is what they’re studying.”
I’ve mentioned in the past that the kids love their technology, but we knew they wouldn’t enjoy these wonders if they were attached to their devices. After our last trip to Sedona, Arizona, they said their favorite part of the trip was how excellent the Wi-Fi was at the hotel. So, we had them leave their cellphones at home.
I’m glad we made that decision, because they loved the trip. There was so much to see; we probably saw less than 1 percent of everything those parks have to offer. You could spend a month in Canyonlands alone. But even though there was a little griping about the lack of technology, the kids seemed to enjoy all the beautiful sights.

My mother is very traditional when it comes to education. Class time is important to her, and if she called the shots, she’d see to it that her grandkids spent their break in summer classes. But the truth is, there is so much to learn about the world that you can’t learn sitting in a classroom or from the internet. Don’t get me wrong, studying in school is important, and we take it seriously. But we also recognize that the best learning our kids will get is from seeing the world for themselves. Our vacation was a massive, seven-day loop around southern Utah and Arizona. We visited several national parks, including Zion, Bryce Canyon, and Canyonlands. We also made stops in Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon, and Horseshoe Bend. We ended the trip at the Grand Canyon. In one week, my kids saw with their own eyes some of the most magnificent places God created for us.

Now that the school year is about to start, my kids will return to a routine and get back to their studies. But I’m glad they got to see beautiful vistas and ancients ruins this summer. I hope they have greater appreciation for past civilizations and our Creator, who made this beautiful world. WILLIAM SHATNER INTERVIEWS THE “FUTURE DOCTOR” ON “MOVING AMERICA FORWARD” INS When I asked them what their favorite experience was this time, I was glad they had a different answer. They told us it was Delicate Arch, the most famous landmark in Arches National Park. The hike to it was a 4-mile out-and-back trek, and it was the most challenging expedition of the whole trip. It’s no coincidence that the most arduous experience of the trip was also the most memorable. It was impactful because they felt a sense of accomplishment afterwards. That’s a valuable lesson for them to learn, and it’s something they wouldn’t have learned sitting in a classroom.
