AIRFAX, VA — The thi rd phase o f the award-winning Sheri- dan Station project recently broke ground in the Sheridan Road neighborhood of Wash- ington, DC, near theAnacostia Metro station. In attendance were Washington, D.C., mayor Vincent Gray and developer WC Smith , as well as rep- resentatives from the city’s Housing Finance Agency and the Housing Authority.The goal of the Sheridan Station development is to preserve af- fordable housing in southeast D.C., while offering a high- quality, sustainable product. Once complete, the entire development will provide 327 condo units and townhomes for rent or sale. The PENJERDEL Coun- cil cited Brandywine’s com- mitment to sustainability and energy efficiency with 108 buildings in its portfolio having earned the EPA’s Energy Star rating. The energy-efficient housing complex includes a 100 kilowatt roof-top solar array, which according to WC Smith will produce enough electricity to offset up to 40% of the annual electric costs for the 114-unit building’s com- mon areas. Additionally, the 125,000 s/f building has a veg- etative green roof, an under- ground rainwater cistern that collects stormwater run-off, LED lights, low-flow plumbing fixtures, high-efficiency HVAC systems, and low-VOC paint.
