Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Friends and Colleagues: Following super storm Sandy, the majority NJ homeowners and small business owners in our state have been and still are faced with the challenges of restoring their homes. Unfortunately many of these structures are being restored to virtually their previous state, which leaves them vulnerable to future natural disasters and an inaccurate belief that green buildings & homes are much more expensive to build. In order to offer owners, contractors and real estate professionals awareness of what makes a home resilient in the face of storms, efficient with a positive market value impact, USGBC NJ and NJ Natural Gas have partnered to co-sponsor a series of free 4-hour workshops open to the public, which will be delivered in Wall, NJ. The course series has been customized in collaboration with USGBC NJ and NJ Natural Gas and is being taught by MaGrann Associates, a premier sustainable home building experts. The next session in the series is geared towards the real estate perspectives of market value of green, high performance buildings and is entitled “Selling High Performance (Energy-Efficient) Homes”. The class will take place in Wall, NJ on Thursday January 23, 2014 from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, with regis- tration and a continental breakfast starting at 7:30. All attendees must register in advance at the fol- lowing link: http://www.usgbcnj.org/events?eventId=803571&EventViewMode=EventDetails In this customized course, real estate professionals and owners will learn how to help buyers and sellers appreciate the market value of energy-efficient homes. We will also cover the selling features of high performance homes, how they outperform most new or existing homes, and why they are more cost-effective. The attendees will learn talking points to help educate clients, financiers and appraisers about the value of energy-efficient homes. Attendees will also find out how to determine if a home is energy-efficient. This workshop is fully-funded under USGBC NJ’s training grant from the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development for qualified grantees and their employees. USGBC NJ will sponsor and absorb the course cost for single proprietors, and homeowners and and is open to the public. Com- panies interested in qualifying for the grant benefits should contact me at (973) 290-0013 or execu- tivedirector@usgbcnj.org. It is a noble goal to be stronger than the storm but why not be smarter than the storm? On behalf of the USGBC NJ family, we wish you and your families a joyous holiday season! Sincerely, FLORENCE BLOCK
