HOLA SOBER AUGUST 2021

Do you have a sober hero heroine? My sober heroine is my friend Laura Silverman. If so, why are they so special to you?

She has accomplished so much on a local and national level to raise awareness about the alcohol-free life and is a champion for others.

Program: 12 Step or Modern Recovery I would describe my personal journey of recovery as a bit of a mix. I attend both 12 step meetings and Laura Mckowen’s The Luckiest Club. Why did you set up Sans Bar? I opened Sans Bar because I realized there were no options to socialize for those who don’t drink. I believe that everyone deserves a safe and inclusive space to connect with other people. What is your favourite summer drink? I am a big fan of a non-alcoholic gin and tonic with a twist of lime. What is your favourite drink to serve at a family barbecue? I like to keep it simple with some ice-cold bubbly water. What is the one store-cupboard ingredient that you have that can make any drink pop? I am a big fan of allspice because it can add depth and warmth to any drink. I also absolutely love fresh mint. Do you believe the glass in which we serve our AF drinks are important? We drink with our eyes first, and proper glassware informs the drinker what they can expect inside the glass. What is next for Sans Bar in a post-vaccine world? We are heading back on the road for the Sans Bar national tour which will host 18 pop-ups across the US and Canada. In addition to the tour, our bar in Austin will continue to expand our hours of operation. What is your top sober tip for readers? Give yourself grace. All too often we feel this external need to push ourselves and be perfect, and that can cause anxiety that prevents us from living the life we want. We are all worthy of self-kindness. What is your one non-negotiable in your day to protect your sobriety? Rest. Before the pandemic, I approached life at this unsustainable pace which was mostly based on the idea that if I slowed down I would lose everything. Once I was forced to be still, and be present with my body I became aware of just how tired I was. Today, I seek rest and let go of anything or anyone that is asking me to sacrifice my mental wellness for the sake of performance or productivity.

"“Listening is not about curing or diagnosing,” Chris said. “It’s about being present. That can feel daunting, but there’s so much healing in the ability to have someone listen to you. And in a social setting like Sans Bar people are connecting on a deep level and they don't want me or anyone to cure them, they just need someone to listen to them. That's powerful. ”

“I’m not a prohibitionist, we tried that experiment in America. It failed miserably, and I don’t want to repeat that.”
