SUMMER READING

"A cassic beach read. Jacqueline Susann's passionate, and passionately written, "Valley of the Dolls" was first published in 1966. Set in the post-World War II New York City, it's a tale of three young women with big dreams, and occasionally big drug problems. Summed up Nancy Bachrach once for NPR, "'Valley of the Dolls' is a zipper- ripper that has been called trashy, tawdry, glitzy, lusty, sordid and seamy -- and that's just the beginning of its appeal."

Longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction and praised by everyone from Candice Carty-Williams to Barack Obama, Luster by Raven Leilani is a book about a young black American woman caught in the intersection of sexism, racism and capitalism. It’s getting rave reviews. Mainly though, I’m living for the excitement of finally finding myself on a nice soggy British beach and beginning my beloved colleague Phoebe Luckhurst’s debut novel The Lock-In. About a group of flatmates who get stuck in their flat together, it’s, on one hand, a feel- good, laugh out loud funny escapist read, and on another a blistering critique of twentysomethings’ experience of renting in the capital.
