LUHSD Parents plead district to permit “Mask Choice” LIBERTY UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT

WALKING THRU IN DISCOVERY BAY BYRON UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT

(BRENTWOOD, CA) – Liberty High School parent, Garrett Harper, spoke to the idea of “mask-choice” at the July 21 LUHSD Board of Trustees meeting. In response to the state mandate imposed last month - requiring all students to wear masks indoors, regardless of vaccination status - Harper appeared on behalf of the health and well-being of his two sons and with concern for approximately 10,000 students in the district returning to school at the end of the month. He encouraged the school district leadership to embrace a position of voluntary masking instead of the mandate, providing a variety of facts and gures to demonstrate the seemingly arbitrary nature of student masking. Harper pointed out to the trustees: “We are at a school right now, in a room full of adults choosing to mask or not mask. Kids should have the same choice.” Board members appeared to be largely in agreement with Harper and other parents who spoke to the same point but stated their hands were largely tied and suggested this ght was best taken higher up the ladder. The State of California mandated mask wearing in the classroom but left enforcement of the policy to each school district. Several school districts in California, including a large district in Roseville, have been public about their decision to not enforce the mandate. In similar news, leaders

#ReopenCaliforniaSchools campaigns led a joint lawsuit against Governor Newsom, CDPH and others, declaring the mask mandate to be unlawful and not based in science or in line with CDC guidance.

After a year on hiatus, students and families in the Byron Union School District resumed the new-school-year tradition of “walk-thru” registration, July 21st, BUSD superintendent, Reyes Gauna, shared: “[I am] super proud of our schools for doing an amazing job with all of our events today. It was exciting to see our students, families, and staff.”
