chatbots to make deals? Where does the human relation- ship go?” For Landaal, the answer lies in how AI is implemented. Landaal Packaging uses rules in its online contact form to immediately send an alert when a prospect meets certain criteria. “Once those criteria are met on the back end, I get an email and call the prospect right away,” he explained. “The prospect says, ‘I just filled that out five minutes ago, and the VP of Sales is already calling me?’ They feel really important. That’s one way we can create trust and begin to build the relationship.” Rather than replacing the relationship, Landaal sees AI as a tool to strengthen it—by accelerating responsiveness and giving salespeople more time to focus on the custom- er. “It’s about using AI to streamline processes so you can always bring the conversation back to the customer prom- ise and the relationship,” he said. Gopakumar added a broader perspective, noting that larger companies are already pushing to use AI more aggressively in customer service, sometimes to the point of replacing jobs. But he argued that this cre- ates an opportunity for indepen- dents to stand out. “More people will be trying to sell using just AI,” Gopakumar said. “The companies who make the effort to keep the relationship going will be the ones who stand out. That’s where the value will be.” Stuckey agreed that differentiation will be key. “The differentiator will no longer be the person talking to the prospect. It’s the data your technology can provide,” he explained. “If I can show my on-time service rates or qual- ity levels instantly, that speaks volumes. But in the end, there will always be a person making the decision. When it’s chatbot versus chatbot, it’s your value adds that will really speak for you.” Together, the panelists suggested a balanced approach: using AI to remove friction and speed up responsiveness, but not at the expense of personal connection. In a future where automation may handle much of the transactional back-and-forth, trust, service, and demonstrable value will remain the cornerstones of customer relationships. Advice For Box Plants: How to Begin The final question posed to the panel: If there was one best way for a box plant to get started using AI, what would it be? Davo Laninga of ePS emphasized the importance of starting with data collection. “Make sure you’re collect- ing information directly from the floor,” he said. “If you don’t have quantifiable, verifiable data, you’re relying on assumptions and what people think is happening on the floor.” Gokul Gopakumar of SUN Automation Group recom- Gokul Gopakumar
