A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10

Last Friday, a group of 10 students from our Eco Committee attended the annual School Eco Conference at Holy Cross School in New Malden. The day had a packed schedule of speakers, presenters, student activities and games. This was a chance for our students to learn about environmental issues in a fun and interactive way as well as being an opportunity to have their voices heard about their ideas for ways to mitigate further damage to the environment. As part of the 16 days of activism against gender based violence, students attended an assembly at the start of the week which focused on the campaign to end violence towards women. Later in the week, Year 10 experienced a riveting ‘empowerment through self defence’ workshop delivered by the charity Action Breaks Silence, which focuses on engaging, educating, and empowering communities to end violence against women and girls. The workshop was both informative and interactive, and our students immersed themselves into the different elements by actively taking part either through sharing their thoughts and ideas or by taking part in the physical training. Students found the workshop to be enjoyable, useful and more importantly beneficial in knowing how to keep themselves safe. This morning we had an assembly discussing Year 10’s upcoming work experience which they will be completing at the end of the Summer term. More information about work experience will be shared shortly. This week’s top epraise points scorers are from a variety of tutor groups - Dora C in 10SDR, Abi B in 10FJA, and Isabelle H in 10SHO. Just four more weeks to see who will be crowned the top epraise winners for the Autumn term, keep up the good work! Next week we have a whole week of house assemblies where students will mix with students in the other year groups but in the same houses. We will hear about all the wonderful fundraising and charity events that the students have contributed to this year so far!

BOOK OF THE MONTH

The Tattooist of Auschwitz - Heather Morris “I tattooed her number on her left hand, and she tattooed her number in my heart,” The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a true story which follows a Slovakian Jew who was imprisoned in the concentration camp Auschwitz in 1942 and fell in love with a girl whose number he tattooed. It’s a true story which follows themes of love, survival and hope as an unforgettable love story unfolds in the midst of an atrocity. I found it to be an extremely emotive, thought provoking and inspiring story which stays with you long after you turn the last page. It’s a very gripping and deeply disturbing novel which encapsulates the horrors of the holocaust and simultaneously sheds a light of comfort and hope; even in the darkest most tragic times, love and hope prevails. ~ Recommended by Marina M-B, Year 11 student
