Self-designed project:

A self-designed PhD will take a little more effort and thought to get started, but you should ultimately end up with a project theme that truly excites and interests you.

After coming up with an initial idea for a project, you will need to identify and contact an appropriate academic supervisor. A good starting point is to find the University department with the areas of strength that are most relevant to your research. You can use Swansea University’s directory of expertise, speak to your current supervisor, or attend a study fair or a Postgraduate Open Day. CONTACT POTENTIAL SUPERVISORS: If you’re looking to start a self-funded project, you’ll have to ensure that you can cover the cost of tuition fees and your living expenses for the duration of your studies. There are various ways to fund your PhD including:  swansea.ac.uk/postgraduate/ fees-and-funding/pg-loans PhD loans available through Student Finance England and Student Finance Wales. FUNDING: Once you have identified a potential supervisor for your own research idea, you’ll need to contact them prior to submitting a formal application. Academics welcome informal approaches from prospective students and they will also be able to help shape your research proposal. Do your research before you submit and take your time preparing.
