The world has its own patterns for home-making and home-breaking. The tragedy is that so often we follow the patterns we see around us, and neglect God’s pattern. Psalm 127 gives us definite guidance on building a home, keeping a home, using a home. If we allow the Word of God to speak to us, if we listen, and—most important—if we obey this teaching on the Christian home, then we can know with assurance that God is with us and our home will be to His honor and His glory. Verse 1 gives us this instruction on building a home. “ Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.” These few words chal lenge the basic structure of every Christian home today with the essential truth that there is only one Builder—God. In some homes the husband is the dynamic character. He does all the deciding and the planning and the arranging. In other Christian homes the wife has control. What she says decides the planning and running of the home. Most domes tic tensions begin here. But the quiet resentment, the silent struggles for power, the clash of wills and personalities are the seeds of future break down.
