WHY A BONE MILL? Harvesting autogenous bone can be performed in many different ways , a number of studies show that bone sludge collected with a bone-trap may harbour bacteria from the saliva and also retains less osteogenic potential because of the increased traumatisation of the cells. Therefore harvesting autogenous bone and subsequent milling to the desired particle size is preferred. Milling the bone harvested either with a rongeur or as a block using rotating or piezo-electric instruments can require significant manual force. This can prolong the time required for milling the harvested bone to the desired particle size and can result in an increased tremor in the hands due to the exertion of force required to mill the bone to aforementioned particle size .
