Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention ISEI Conference History
Since 2003, the International Society on Early Intervention (ISEI) has hosted 8 conferences in various locations around the world. Together, we convene to share experiences and education while fostering the opportunity for collaboration between individuals with the goal to provide a framework and forum for professionals from around the world to communicate about advances in the field of early intervention. With over 600 attendees at this year’s Portugal conference, we look forward to exploring each community and culture represented as we seek to advance comprehensive early childhood intervention, together.

Dear International Society on Early Intervention Members, Eurlyaid Members, and Conference Attendees, Conference Introduction Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention We are so excited to welcome you to our conference in beautiful Portugal and pleased that the International Society on Early Intervention has been able to partner with Eurlyaid, the European Association on Early Childhood Intervention. The theme of our conference, Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood intervention: What parents, professionals, science, and national systems can tell us, provides us with the opportunity to learn from each other and to continue to advance the field of ECI through innovative research to practice presentations. The conference offers a total of 420 presentations, including keynote presentations, symposia, papers, and posters that are focused on developing, implementing, and evaluating innovative and effective service solutions to the most challenging issues facing our field. We feel confident that the over 600 conference attendees from over 48 countries will benefit from the conference, and be able apply what is learned across and within country ECI systems. Our ultimate goal is to use what is learned at the conference to better meet the needs of infants and young children with delays, disabilities, or developmental risks and their families. Your participation and help in doing so is much appreciated. This conference represents the work of so many who are dedicated to advancing the ECI field. In particular, Eurlyaid, has been instrumental to this conference, ensuring every detail has been addressed. We are grateful for their partnership and support. The joint ISEI and Eurlyaid Scientific Program Committee listed below assisted in crafting our program. The range of abstracts reviewed and selected was remarkable, providing a global picture of emerging advances in our field. The papers and posters were grouped into topical areas that you will find in the program. Lastly, we thank the many volunteers who will be working during the conference to address your needs.
Kind regards,
Ana Maria Serrano President, Eurlyaid Conference Planning Committee Noor van Loen Treasurer, Eurlyaid Conference Planning Committee

Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention Workshops
ISEI Workshop
This practical workshop will provide an understanding of how body shape changes can occur in young children and how they can be prevented, improved and maintained. It will combine key contemporary Early Childhood Intervention The Impact of Working in Partnership With Families to Build Understanding and Implementation of Supported Lying Denise Luscombe Director of Postural Care Australia; Chair of Professionals and Researchers in ECI practices such as family-centered practice with a particular focus on family capacity building and working in partnership, with contemporary postural care knowledge. Using case studies to highlight the value of working closely with families in achieving the outcome of preventing or minimizing body shape changes in young children. A simple framework will be provided that can be utilized when working with families and by families themselves. International Workshop on Early Childhood Intervention Systems of Personnel Development Mary Beth Bruder Director, University of Connecticut Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, Research, and Service; ISE Chair Tuesday, September 2 10:00am - 3:00pm nd The purpose of this workshop is to address the urgent need for qualified, competent and interdisciplinary early childhood interventionists (ECI) to meet the growing and complex needs of infants and young children with disabilities and their families. While families and caregivers are the constant and most important variable who contribute to ECI efficacy, personnel are next in importance for ensuring optimal child and family outcomes. As countries develop and expand ECI systems, personnel who can develop, deliver, and evaluate individualized, effective, and appropriate interventions for all infants and young children and their families is of critical importance. The workshop will include representatives from different countries who will present models to attract, prepare and retain ECI personnel through preservice preparation and in-service continuing education. During the afternoon, personnel standards, competencies, and fidelity of implementation for specific practices will be discussed, and technical assistance on comprehensive personnel development systems will be provided. Eurlyaid Workshops Tuesday, September 2 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm nd
This workshop will address children with severe and complex disabilities who often have feeding difficulties, making mealtimes challenging. What does feeding and mealtime mean for them? How can we provide them with good mealtime Children with Feeding Challenges - A Long Journey From Looking at the Food to Swallowing It Ena Heimdahl Senior Advisor, Statped Department of Complex Learning Difficulties; Eurylaid Board Member
experiences and act as a "thermometer" in the interaction and relationship between the child and their caregiver? What role do other children play in creating an inclusive mealtime setting? What about the thoughts and feelings of children who are unable to communicate about their meals? The focus will be on the important—and often crucial—contributions from the field of education, in an area where pedagogy and medicine intersect. To address these questions, the workshop will use video examples and reflection tasks as methodology.

Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention Keynote Speakers
Wednesday, September 3 9:30am - 10:30am rd
Developing Best Practice Guidelines Ana Maria Serrano Associate Professor of Special Education University of Minho, Portugal
This presentation will be about the story, the motives and the process of designing the Guidelines for Evidence Based Practices to support Professional Development of the Portuguese Early Intervention System (SNIPI) by a joint collaboration of a group of practitioners, researchers and families, within a Gulbenkian Foundation Project – IM2 (Intervene More, Intervene Better).
Wednesday, September 3 11:00am - 12:00pm rd
This presentation will include a description of the lessons learned from more than 50 years of research and practice using an applied family systems model to guide the implementation of early childhood intervention with young children with identified disabilities and developmental delays and their families. The model includes four components: interventions based on family- identified needs, the support and resources for needs satisfaction, family and family member strengths for obtaining needed family and child support and resources, and practitioner use of Lessons Learned from Applied Family Systems Early Childhood Intervention Research and Practice Carl J. Dunst Senior Research Scientist, Orelena Hawks Puckett Institute
relational and participatory family-centered practices to strengthen existing family, parent, and child capabilities and promote the development of new competencies. Research supporting the relationships among and the consequences of the four components of the model will be briefly described and illustrated with real-life examples of what applied family systems early childhood intervention practice “look like” from parents and other caregivers perspectives of their every day lives and their involvement in early childhood intervention.

Early Interventions and Autism: Where We Have Been and the Promise of Where We Can Go! Connie Kasari Distinguished Professor of Human Development and Psychology, University of California This presentation will discuss the development of social engagement and communication skills remains a central focus of early intervention for children with autism. This talk will reflect on more than two decades of research on interventions aimed at improving social communication and language outcomes, highlighting both what we’ve accomplished and where the field is headed. Special attention will be given to children who are often excluded from research — those who are limited language and
significantly developmentally delayed. As the field moves forward, it is increasingly clear that no single intervention is effective for all children. A more promising path lies in the personalization of interventions—tailoring approaches to each child’s developmental profile, communication needs, and family context.

CanChild’s F-Words for Child Development: Families and Professionals, Decades of Learning Peter Rosenbaum Professor of Pediatrics, McMaster University, Canada Research Chair in Childhood Disability 2001-14 Co-Founder, CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability Research In the 21st century, there has been an important expansion of our thinking about “childhood disability”. Many of these ideas are not so much new as better emphasized, while others are being studied carefully and are leading to a firmer evidence base to support them. In this talk, I would like to present and explore several related ideas, and then show how – when woven together – these approaches allow the parents of children with
developmental challenges, and the people who work with them, to reframe what we do, why we do it, and why it matters.
