Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention Symposia

Session 1

S1.01 Building a New National Best Practice Framework for Early Childhood Intervention in Australia Symposium Organizer: Christine Imms (Australia) Affiliation : University of Melbourne This symposium will present three papers describing the development of a new National Practice Framework to support universal, equitable, and high-quality early childhood intervention (ECI) based on best practice for children with developmental concerns, delay or disability no matter the source of the services and supports they seek and receive across Australia. The implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Australia, which provides personalized funding to pay to access disability services and supports, profoundly disrupted the provision of services to young children with developmental concerns, delay or disability and their families. We will report on a consortium led project to review best practice in ECI and co-create a new National Practice Framework/Methods: (1) a desktop review of the evidence describing best practice, undertaken in three parts using narrative, scoping, and systematic review methods; (2) community consultations undertaken with four stakeholder groups (n=1400+): families of children with developmental concerns, delay, or disability; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, community-controlled peak organizations and service providers; young people aged 15-30 years with lived experience; and ECI practitioners, researchers, advocacy organizations, peak and professional bodies, managers, and government agencies; (3) synthesis of findings from the desktop reviews and consultations to create a new National Practice Framework; and (4) development of resources and communication strategies to support implementation. The symposium will present and discuss findings of the project that has resulted in the creation of a National Practice Framework for ECI in Australia.
