Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention Symposia S1.02 Building Family-Centered Approach in Portugal: Addressing the Myths and Illustrating the Practices This symposium aims to share and reflect on efforts and initiatives towards building a family-centered approach in Portugal. ANIP’s presentations will highlight the principles and evidence of ECI, illustrating them with a strong practical approach. Through examples developed in Portugal, specifically in the District of Coimbra, we aim to put into perspective the myths often associated with the most traditional interventions: parallel and fragmented center-based services/supports; intervention focused on the child's deficits, as opposed to practices such as family-centered and routines-based intervention; natural learning environments; transdisciplinary teams; and community-based coordination of services. The focus of this symposium will be on the voices, feelings, and experience of the key participants in the process: families and ECI professionals highlighting effective helping practices with emphasis on participatory practices, integrated and transdisciplinary services, professional development with both dimensions of continuous training and reflective supervision. ANIP, as a leading promoter of ECI in Portugal, brings 26 years of experience gathering evidences, testimonies, and reflections from families and professionals, and has advocated for public policies concerning the provision of family capacity building in ECI. The papers presented at this symposium will also fulfill this role, allowing reflections and implications for practice, supporting the paradigm shift at national and international levels.
