Symposia Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention S2.01 Advancing Early Relational Health Within Early Childhood Intervention Symposium Organizer: Toby Long (USA) Affiliation : Georgetown University, Thrive Center for Children, Families, and Communities

Approximately 15% of the world’s children experience a mental, behavioral, or developmental problem. These challenges emerge at an early age and predict mental, social, and academic challenges later in life. The impacts of domestic and political crises contribute to these challenges and affect the developmental well-being of families and children, particularly the impact of trauma. Early Childhood Interventionists (ECI) are the first to provide trauma-informed, developmental, and relational services to infants, toddlers, and preschoolers with developmental delays or disabilities, many of whom also have co-occurring social-emotional challenges. The tenets of ECI require us to collaborate with families, helping them mitigate the impacts of stress and support their child’s development using community-based, naturally occurring relational and learning opportunities. The Early Relational Health (ERH) framework promotes building the relational capacity of families, caregivers, and communities to support young children’s growth and development as the essential foundation for physical, behavioral, and mental health, resilience, and well-being. Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation is a prevention-based approach that operationalizes Early Relational Health, equipping caregivers to facilitate children’s healthy social and emotional development. This symposium will discuss the integration of the ERH Framework within ECI, discuss how ECI providers can use the principles of ERH to enhance their family partnerships, and introduce Infant Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation Health Consultation (IECMHC) as a strategy for providers to incorporate into their intervention plans.
