Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention Symposia S3.02 Prevention Through Connection: The Role of Early Relational Health in Early Intervention Symposium Organizer: Nisha Sanghvi (USA) Affiliation : Early Intervention Training Program, University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign “Early relational health is defined as a foundational, cultural embedded and developing set of positive, responsive, and reciprocal interactions from birth that nurture and build emotional connections between caregivers, infants, and young children and result in emerging confidence, competence, and emotional well-being for all.” (Willis) Early Relational Health (ERH) principles are strength-based and highlight the importance of safe, stable, and nurturing relationships at home and in the community to help children thrive. Current research around brain sciences in children and the impact of relationships with caregivers highlights how early intervention is uniquely positioned to provide capacity-building supports to promote children’s growth and development. A paradigm shift from deficit-focused model to family-centered approaches with a holistic framework, attending to physical, developmental, and relational health can create universal access for all children and families with a promotion-prevention-intervention lens to support development and build resiliency. Illinois and national guiding early intervention principles align with ERH approaches to establish trusting partnerships with coaching approaches to build caregiver capacities for responsive practices within daily routines and interactions in natural environments. This symposium will share how ERH principles integrated into early intervention practice can promote the team’s ability to understand, monitor, and strengthen caregiver-child relationships to build capacities for exploration and learning within the context of family, community, neighborhoods, and society.
