Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention Symposia S3.03 Research Foundations for Family Social Systems Early Childhood Intervention Practices Symposium Organizer: Carl J. Dunst, Melinda Raab (USA) Affiliation : Orelena Hawks Puckett Institute Family social systems early childhood intervention (ECI) practices are based on the fact that children are embedded in families, families are embedded in broader-based social systems, and that experiences and events in different family and social systems are directly and indirectly determinants of family, parent, and child functioning. These contentions demand research evidence that system intervention practices are empirically related to variations in family, parent, parent-child, and child behavior and functioning. This presentation will involve a description of a family social systems ECI model and include findings from studies that have found that: (1) family-centered practices are related to different kinds of family and parent behavior; (2) family needs, family social support, and family member strengths are related to parental time and psychological energy needed to carry out parenting responsibilities; (3) different parental beliefs and practices are related to child engagement in everyday learning opportunities and parent responsiveness to child interactions; and (4) parent and child interests and strengths are related to optimal child learning and development. The evidence base for these relationships includes meta-analyses of family social systems, ECI practices studies, and intervention studies conducted by the presenters and their colleagues investigating the conditions under which ECI is likely to have optimal positive family, parent, and child benefits. Special emphasis will be placed on recent findings highlighting factors and reasons why parents and other primary caregivers of young children with identified disabilities and developmental delays do or do not commit to their involvement in ECI.
