Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention Symposia

S3.04 Supporting Children With Disabilities through Effective Professional Development: Contributions from Research to Place-Based Resources Symposium Organizer: Camille Catlett (USA) Affiliation : UNC Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute (FPG) It is widely acknowledged that young children with and without disabilities benefit from high-quality settings that provide close, responsive and stimulating interactions, leading to more effective learning and development. Professional development (PD) has been identified as an effective approach to promote high-quality practices in early childhood contexts and support the implementation of inclusive practices. This symposium addresses several key ingredients of professional development approaches. The first talk presents the Bridging project, based on an action-research design methodology involving school settings, cultural institutions, and universities. Staff were engaged in a PD program to improve the quality of inclusive practices and facilitate new ways of looking, thinking, and acting upon the urban environment. In this paper, the PD goals, main activities, and results will be presented. The second talk presents the Crescer Seguro, a municipality-focused, multi-level PD program, involving professionals, pedagogical leaders and administrations of 43 childcare centers in Guimarães, Portugal. The initiative aims to promote an integrated knowledge foundation based on child development for high-quality practices to support children with and without disabilities, combining the best available research with fieldwork expertise. The main goals, contents and preliminary results will be discussed. The third talk presents an innovative and useful instructional tool called personas. This segment will share how these brief but skillfully crafted child/family stories about young children with disabilities have been used and proven to increase learner engagement and effective application of evidence-based practices.
