Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention Symposia S4.02 Assessing Well-Being in Young Children and School Children With Disabilities: Conceptual and Measurement Issues Symposium Organizer: Mats Granlund (Sweden) Affiliation : CHILD, School of Health Sciences, Sweden; CAAC, University of Pretoria, South Africa Mental health and mental health problems are separate but related continua. The dual continua model defines mental health as well-being, encompassing emotional, psychological, and social dimensions, where ratings of psychological and social well-being partly reflect functioning. Individuals can experience high (flourishing), less than optimal or low (languishing) well-being, irrespective of mental health problems, thus focus is not only on the absence of problems for estimating well-being. In addition, well-being seems to protect from the consequences of mental health problems. Since well-being is subjective, self- reports are essential. However, children with disabilities are often excluded from self-report measures due to a lack of consideration of cognitive adaptations in the instruments. This highlights the need to design measures to accommodate the diverse challenges of children with disabilities and ensure accessibility and representation. For those unable to self-report, such as young children or children with more severe impairments, proxy ratings or observations of engagement can indicate well- being, as it reflects active involvement, persistence in the activity, and partly emotional regulation. The symposium will explore conceptual issues in measuring well-being for young children and children with disabilities, present the development of an inclusive self-report tool, and discuss whether engagement can be used as an alternative indicator of well-being in preschool, and primary school settings for these children.
