Symposia Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention S4.03 Early Childhood Intervention in Times of War: Ukraine’s Experience Symposium Organizer: Anna Kukuruza (Ukraine) Affiliation : Ukrainian Association on Early Childhood Intervention

The beginning of Russia’s large-scale aggression against Ukraine in February 2022 presented challenges for early intervention professionals and the families they support. Parents and professionals alike faced a shared traumatic experience. Both groups struggled to adapt their work and daily lives to a completely new and volatile environment, necessitating adjustments to early childhood intervention services. The previous experience gained during the COVID-19 pandemic enabled uninterrupted continuation of services since the beginning of the war. Early intervention teams managed to maintain the frequency, duration, and structure of meetings, adhering to the core principles of family-centered and routine-based early childhood intervention. At the same time, over nearly three years of military aggression, the broader context in the country has evolved, and both professionals and families have undergone personal transformations shaped by the war. The symposium will feature presentations addressing the following key questions: What are the specific features and dynamics of early childhood intervention services in a wartime context? How can early intervention specialists maintain professional resilience during war? How have the structure and functioning of social support networks for families and professionals changed since the war began? What strategies can support the social networks of families and professionals during wartime? What professional and personal dilemmas do early intervention specialists face during war?
