Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention Symposia S4.04 Inclusion Practices in Early Childhood Education and Care Symposium Organizer: Elena Soukakou (Greece) Affiliation : National and Kapodistrian University, Department of Early Childhood Education, Athens
This symposium focuses on implementing early childhood inclusion across different contexts and countries. The first paper presents the results of a scoping review that seeks to identify existing gaps in knowledge about implementing inclusive practices. A PRISMA-guided search strategy identified 276 papers for abstract review, of which 94 papers were retained for full-text review. Results related to the policies, programs, and practices implemented, implementation models and components described, the terminology used to discuss implementation, and the factors facilitating implementation and the barriers will be discussed. The second paper focuses on findings from four studies in Sweden. These studies provided insights into inclusive preschools concerning support provisions, forms of preschool inclusion, and methods and tools supporting the development of inclusive preschools. The third paper aims to describe the inclusive practices that preschool teachers in Singapore used when they have children with developmental needs in their classroom. A total of 43 classrooms were observed. The scores distribution for each of the 12 items on the Inclusive Classroom Profile (ICP) were analyzed and reported. The fourth paper focuses on cultural considerations in using the ICP across contexts with examples from Poland and Singapore. Results from a small qualitative study conducted in Singapore to understand the cultural and contextual differences and nuances will be shared.
