Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention

79 Session 5

Symposia S5.01 Advancing Early Intervention Care for Children and Families With Adversities Through a Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention Children exposed to maltreatment are at significant risk of developmental delays, behavioral and psychological problems, difficulty forming secure attachments with their caregivers, and experiencing poor caregiver-child interactions. Their families also have complex psychosocial needs that are overlooked. Yet the existing system of managing these children focuses mainly on the safeguarding aspects. This symposium showcases a comprehensive pioneer home visiting program in Singapore that addresses these gaps in management, improving outcomes for children and families exposed to adversities. The first speaker will provide an overview of the program model that is founded upon multi-disciplinary, inter-professional collaboration. Multi-faceted interventions are provided to the child-caregiver dyad faced with adversity and their family. We will discuss the evolution of the program’s service delivery model from a pilot to a mainstream program, including challenges of mainstreaming a program, navigating through national systems, and interactions with other agencies. We will also share plans to advance this mainstreamed model. The second speaker will describe the outcomes of our pilot program, where children enrolled have shown significant improvements in their development and behavioral concerns. The third speaker will use case studies to illustrate how adversities impact a child’s development, social-emotional skills, and behavior. The tailored interventions and outcomes of these different families with intergenerational trauma will be shared.
