Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention

Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention Symposia S5.02 Advancing Equity and Implementation of Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Mental health and behavioral concerns are being identified at increased levels in early childhood populations (Firestein et al., 2022), with 1 in 6 children aged 2-8 having mental health or behavioral disorders (Cree et al., 2018). Recent research demonstrates the positive impacts of Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) consultation services on child outcomes in Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) related settings (Silver et al., 2023) as well as positive links to caregiver/early education teacher outcomes (Loomis et al., 2024; Silver et al., 2023). Yet, there remain shortages of providers and limited services available throughout the United States and beyond (Loomis et al., 2024). This symposium will include four key papers focused on work occurring to advance the implementation and scale-up of IECMH consultation services available in statewide systems in the US. The papers will present recent research on: (1) using implementation science frameworks to advance policy-driven initiatives that promote IECMH consultation (decreasing time to implementation and improving service quality); (2) reflective supervision: promoting well-being and addressing compassion satisfaction (reducing compassion fatigue) of IECMH consultants in ECI; (3) leveraging data to drive implementation process and evaluation: an implementation stages focused evaluation of IECMH consultation; and (4) creating space and making pathways for a more diverse IECMH consultation workforce.
