Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention Symposia S6.04 Professional Development to Improve Early Childhood Inclusion Symposium Organizer: Elizabeth A. Steed (USA) Affiliation : University of Colorado Denver
This symposium will focus on how professional development can address barriers to early childhood inclusion, giving early childhood intervention personnel the confidence and competence to maximize children with disabilities’ rights and meaningful belonging in their communities. First, two different approaches to evidence- based professional development in inclusion will be presented, including one paper’s use of in-person training and classroom coaching across six regions in a lower-middle income Caucasian country and another paper’s implementation of case-based learning in a Western state in the US. In both cases, inclusion-focused training used with early childhood personnel was embedded into the country and state’s professional development system. Lessons learned regarding effective professional development practices and infrastructure to support sustained use of inclusion-focused training will be discussed. A third paper will present the birth to 3 high quality inclusion indicators that were developed to respond to the evolving needs of providers who serve infants and toddlers with disabilities in early learning settings. We will discuss the inclusion indicators and their potential to serve as a capacity building tool for practitioners to create equitable and inclusive access, experiences, and outcomes for the youngest of children in early care environments. Finally, a training approach to support the inclusion of young children with disabilities and other marginalized identities will be presented. The paper draws on frameworks such as culturally relevant pedagogy and DisCrit to highlight strategies for building early childhood intervention personnel’s skills to work effectively with culturally and linguistically diverse children with disabilities and their families.
