Symposia Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention S7.01 Cross-Cultural Research in Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education: Methodological and Ethical Considerations Symposium Organizer: Ching-I Chen, Carmen Dionne, Hsiu-Wen Yang (USA) Affiliation : Kent State University Conducting cross-cultural research in Early Intervention and Early Childhood Special Education (EI/ECSE) offers significant benefits for improving the outcomes of children with disabilities and their families. To ensure diverse populations are meaningfully represented and to advance the field through data-driven insights, addressing methodological and ethical aspects and challenges is essential. This symposium will explore key considerations and examples of conducting EI/ECSE research globally, focusing on: (1) cross-cultural systematic literature reviews; (2) cultural adaptation for contextualized practices; (3) translation and adaptation of instruments/measures; and (4) the role of researcher-translators. Paper 1 will discuss challenges and methodological considerations in conducting rigorous cross-cultural systematic literature reviews. Presenters will provide guidelines to support the development and dissemination of methodologically sound reviews. Paper 2 will address lessons learned from translating and adapting instruments for diverse populations, emphasizing quality control and the challenges related to content, format, and utilization. Paper 3 will present findings from studies examining the psychometric properties of the Albanian version of the Assessment, Evaluation, and Programming System for Infants and Children- 3rd Edition (AEPS-3). Paper 4 will explore the complexities faced by bilingual researchers in conducting research, as well as translating, interpreting, and disseminating findings across languages. These challenges highlight the need to include and amplify underrepresented, non-dominant linguistic, cultural, theoretical, and methodological perspectives in the literature.
