Symposia Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention S8.02 Coaching to Support Practice Implementation: Digging Into the Data Symposium Organizer: Adrienne K. Golden (USA) Affiliation : Vanderbilt University
Research on student success in elementary school has shown that social-emotional competence supports academic outcomes and positive relationships (Jones et al., 2015; Korpershoek et al., 2016). Preschool and kindergarten (first year primary) teachers feel underprepared to implement developmentally appropriate, evidence-based strategies to support social-emotional learning. The Pyramid Model (PM), an evidence-based framework for promoting social-emotional competence and addressing challenging behavior, is effective for improving social, emotional, and behavioral outcomes (Hemmeter et al., 2016; 2021). Practice-Based Coaching (PBC; Snyder et al., 2022) is used to support teacher implementation of PM practices. PBC is a cyclical framework including: (1) shared goals and action planning; (2) focused observations; and (3) reflection and feedback, delivered within the context of a collaborative partnership between the coach and teacher. This symposium will focus on a randomized control trial evaluating the effectiveness of PM implementation in preschool and kindergarten classrooms. The three papers will include: (1) an overview of research methods and teacher outcome data; (2) a description of the coaching model and analysis of coaching fidelity data; and (3) a qualitative analysis of the content of coaching and connections to teacher outcomes. This symposium will focus on understanding issues related to coaching fidelity and content in connection to changes in teacher implementation of PM practices. Future directions for research will be discussed.
