Advancing Comprehensive Early Childhood Intervention Symposia S9.03 Mentoring Early Childhood Doctoral Students and Early Career Faculty: Creating Culture and Climate of Support Symposium Organizer: Lindsay Diamond (USA) Affiliation : University of Nevada, Reno This symposium includes a discussion of four publications centered around the topic of mentoring doctoral students and early career faculty positions within early intervention/early childhood special education (EI/ECSE). We will begin by sharing findings from a recent review of literature about doctoral preparation in special education. Then, we will present findings from a study that examined perspectives from mentors and mentees about their participation in a mentoring initiative for EI/ECSE doctoral students. The third study will focus on ways early career faculty have been mentored as they transition to academia. The final study will review findings from a study about the preparation of early career faculty to teach in higher education upon completion of their doctoral degree. As minimal research has been published about the preparation, support, and mentorship of doctoral students and early career faculty in EI/ECSE, the aim of this symposium is to synthesize empirical and non- empirical publications. Throughout the symposium, presenters will ask participants to reflect upon their understanding of the following: (1) the needs of special education doctoral students based upon the review of literature; (2) ways to provide mentorship; (3) resources and supports early career faculty report they need in order to be successful teaching and supervising in higher education; and (4) ways in which early career faculty describe they were prepared to teach/supervise in higher education. Additionally, participants will be asked to share their thoughts about next steps in supporting special education doctoral students and early career faculty.
