SASKATCHEWAN GLACIER 52°08’18.8”N 117°11’35.6”W
“There’s a special kind of clarity one can find at night under the stars. As though the world slows allowing us the time and space to strip away any outside noise in order to ask the deeper questions to better understand ourselves and our dreams. Look up and listen. The universe whispers.”
The atmosphere was charged and electric, alive with an energy I’d never experienced in my lifetime. A 2-second timer, 15 forever seconds later, and the audible closure of the mirror on my beloved ancient DSLR produced a blurry but vibrant image that flashed on the back of my camera screen. I remember screaming in delight, an elation that felt oddly transformative. The experience and defining moment went on to change the course of my life as I knew it. And so my love for capturing the night was born, and what came with it was this insatiable curiosity and drive to explore. My camera has since taken me on some incredible adventures across the world and eventually landed me a home base within the heart of the Canadian Rockies. A place where winter sculpts and shapes the landscapes daily through fluctuation in temperatures, creating an ever-changing and endlessly inspiring canvas to explore. I find myself irresistibly drawn to the allure of these cold, raw, and untouched worlds, inspired to capture their true essence in hopes of igniting a sense of wonder and appreciation for their dark and untamed beauty. And while there’s no question that these regions present a formidable challenge in extremes of elements that will test all of mind, body, and spirit, the reward of learning to embrace the discomfort is an experience that both enriches and etches itself into your memory for all eternity. To savour the journey as much as the destination is an art form in itself, one that often results in the most memorable images, forever frozen in time. With every click of the shutter, I hope to evoke emotions within the viewer that transcend past the image itself, as if they’re living and breathing the same wild experience. The stark contrast between light and shadow play on the earth, juxtaposed by the moon and the stars in the sky, alongside the solitude and stillness felt within. It’s undeniable that there’s a certain level of magic that unfolds during these quiet moments that brings on an elevated sense of interconnectedness to nature and one’s self. Whether it be a glacier expedition, climbing to a mountain summit, or watching the skies erupt overhead in pulsating light, this is where you’ll find me—camera in hand, heart full, in the cold regions that make me feel the most alive.
