VOLUME THREE CONTRIBUTORS Growing up in the UK, Ireland, and Iran, Sophie traveled to East Africa in her early twenties where she met eight-time Emmy Winner & Cinematographer Hugo van Lawick. Hugo, renowned for his long-term partnership with National Geographic and Jane Goodall, took Sophie on as a fi lming apprentice in the 1990’s and she spent several years learning the craft of natural history fi lmmaking out on the Serengeti Plains. Sophie carries on Hugo’s legacy today, in addition to fi lming she is actively and passionately involved in mentoring, public speaking & increasing diversity in wildlife fi lmmaking.

SOPHIE LANFEAR Sophie Lanfear is an Emmy Award-winning Producer/Director/Writer known for her captivating wildlife content since 2006. Her dream of joining the BBC Natural History Unit and working on a landmark David Attenborough series became a reality with roles on Life Story , The Hunt , and Netflix’s Our Planet. Her latest challenge was Netflix’s Life on Our Planet , where she brought ancient creatures back to life under narration by Morgan Freeman. Lanfear’s passion for conservation and storytelling through film has inspired audiences worldwide, as she often focuses on raising awareness about environmental issues and the importance of protecting biodiversity. INSTAGRAM: @SOPHIE_LANFEAR JULIA WIMMERLIN Ukrainian-born photographer Julia Wimmerlin has a diverse international background and is currently based in Switzerland. She transitioned from a successful 15-year career in international marketing to pursue photography in 2014. Primarily self-taught, Wimmerlin specializes in commercial travel and portrait photography. She shifted focus to contemporary art photography in response to COVID-19 travel bans and the onset of the war in Ukraine in 2021–2022. Wimmerlin is currently exploring longer-term research projects to understand current events and personal identity. She started her photography journey in 2003 and has since gained recognition for her cinematic quality and emotional storytelling. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she adapted her work by using mannequins and sculpted masks. Her artistic pursuits include sculpting, painting, set design, and wardrobe design. She’s known for her surrealistic photography style and has been featured in numerous publications. With 30 years of experience, her emotionally resonant work is celebrated in Disney, Netflix, and BBC series like Dynasties , The Hunt and Our Planet . Recently, she served as one of the two female Directors of Photography, alongside Justine Evans, for National Geographic’s ‘Queens,’ continuing her mentor Emmy winner Hugo van Lawick’s legacy by championing diversity in the industry, particularly in encouraging more women to pursue careers behind the camera. She has done several exhibitions, publications, and has collaborated with global hotel chains and clothing brands, as well as Adobe. Her main focus is on capturing and sharing the beauty we have around us while traveling in search of even more.
