I am delighted to share the news that Waldegrave was placed 8th best comprehensive school in the UK in The Times Parent Power List published today. Furthermore, our DFE P8 score, which was our best ever, placed us in the top 3% of all schools nationally, a figure that includes selective schools. Well done everyone! We couldn’t be more proud of our tremendous students and staff who made these achievements possible! This week our German A level students enjoyed a trip to the BFI for a workshop on the award winning film, Goodbye Lenin, which explores the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany. A group of Year 11 students have also attended Science Live in London, hearing from leading scientists including Professor Robert Winston and Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock. In school we welcomed Professor Mark Blagrove to talk to sixth form students about his fascinating research into sleep and dreams. Don’t forget tomorrow is our annual PTA Christmas Tree and Preloved Uniform sale. Pre orders via ParentPay have ended but you are in luck if you missed it as the PTA will have extra trees available for purchase on the day. Come along if you would like a real tree for Christmas!

It is the time of year when respiratory and other seasonal viruses can spread quickly and easily. If your child has diarrhoea and/or vomiting or high temperature and is unwell, they should not attend school or mix with others outside of school, until they no longer have a high temperature, diarrhoea and/or vomiting for 48 hrs and are well enough to go back to school and other social activities. Click here for our guide on reducing the spread of infections. The consultation period for our updated Relationships and Sex Education Policy is now underway and the draft Policy is available to view on our website. If you would like to participate in a parent focus group to discuss the Policy, please complete this Google form expressing your interest.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 13
On Tuesday, a large number of students attended a really fascinating talk by Professor Mark Blagrove, who talked to them about “The Psychology of Dreams”. During the talk, he discussed the psychology and neuroscience of dreaming, including in this a positive evaluation of the views of Sigmund Freud. He also addressed recent findings that the discussion of dreams leads to increased empathy towards the dream-sharer and that dream-sharing may have had an effect or even evolutionary function in human history and prehistory in promoting group bonding and mutual understanding. On Wednesday, Year 13 German students enjoyed a day at the BFI on the Southbank participating in a German Study Day led by Dr Judith Rifeser exploring The Legacy of East Germany through Film. The morning was spent with students building their cultural capital, expanding their vocabulary and improving their critical film analysis skills. The day was conducted in German with tasks ranging from debate to arguing their points and justifying opinions. After lunch they were treated to a full length showing of the 2003 film Goodbye, Lenin! It was an exciting afternoon on Wednesday for our Sixth Form boys Football team as they faced Orleans Park School. Both teams showed great determination on the field and our Sixth Formers demonstrated remarkable teamwork leading them to victory with a final score of 3-2. A Level student Emily M has organised a charity fundraiser live music concert which will take place later today. All proceeds from this evening’s performance will be donated to the charity Music For All. I am sure it will be a very enjoyable evening, we look forward to hearing all about it and finding out how much money is raised! Next Monday, we are excited to announce that Matilda Scott, one of our alumni, will be sharing her insights about her career in Psychology. Matilda is a counselling psychologist at the NHS and will present “From Waldegrave School to Becoming a Psychologist” in the sixth form study base from 3.30-4.30pm. She will be discussing her career journey, starting from Waldegrave School to becoming a counselling psychologist for the NHS, specialising in eating disorders. This will be an excellent talk for those students who are interested in learning about the field of Psychology and what it’s like to be a psychologist and will give them a great opportunity to gain valuable insights. On Tuesday, our A Level Photography students will attend an enriching day at the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize. We look forward to hearing all about it and the details will be published in next week’s bulletin.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a book written in the perspective of a 15 year old boy named Charlie, who is entering a new nerving year of highschool. It follows the life of him and his friends and the challenges that they face, finding their true selves in the process.
What I found most powerful was hearing about the experiences of the different characters as they were growing up.

NOTICE FROM THE P.E. DEPARTMENT With the weather getting colder and wetter, the P.E. department would like to remind you that students should be wearing a different pair of trainers in their P.E. lessons to the black trainers they use as their school shoes. This is for health and safety reasons, as most fashion trainers do not have the correct support or grip for exercising and playing sport. Also, when taking part in activities on the field such as football or rugby, footwear can get very wet and muddy and this is also not comfortable or safe to be wearing for the rest of the school day. P.E. trainers can be any colour, but we just ask that they are proper sports trainers.

Cucina have put together a lovely Christmas menu for students and staff to enjoy a Christmas Feast.
KS4 and KS5 Christmas lunch will take place on 13 December and KS3 will take place on 14 December.
Tickets will be available for students to purchase in the canteen from Monday 27 November until Friday 8 December.
Tickets cost £3.50 and students will be given a ticket that they should keep and present on the day.

A traditional service of nine lessons telling the Christmas story will be accompanied with choral items and congregations singing of traditional carols. It is free entry to this event however you will only be admitted in if you present a ticket, please click here to reserve your space! The limit on numbers will be lifted on Monday.
