Load Lifting

Learning Objectives • Be able to locate the fulcrum on a lever. • Understand the relationship between the location of the fulcrum and the force it takes to lift a load.

Equipment List • LearnLever™ Mini Lever Class Set

Suggested Timing • 45+ minutes

• 4 mini levers • 72 beanbags

SET UP • The lever arm is the piece with the orange and green cups already attached. It has holes underneath which represent the different fulcrum locations possible. • Connect the lever arm to the fulcrum (blue base) with the black hook and loop strap. • Adjust the fulcrum location by moving the lever arm horizontally and aligning the fulcrum base with a different hole on the lever arm. • Adjust the tightness with the strap so that the cups stay upright during the lesson.

Fulcrum

TEACH • Identify the orange cup as the force and the green cup as the load. • Begin the experiment by placing the lever on the fulcrum point closest to the green cup. • Place 5 beanbags in the green cup, representing the load. • One by one, add beanbags to the orange cup to determine the amount of force required to lift the load. • Remove the beanbags from the orange cup, but keep the beanbags in the green cup. Move the lever so the fulcrum is one spot farther away from the load. • One by one, add beanbags to the orange cup to determine the amount of force required to lift the same load with a different fulcrum point. • Continue the experiment by moving the lever so the fulcrum is one spot farther away from the load.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS • How many beanbags are needed to lift the load when the fulcrum is closest to the load? • How many beanbags are needed to lift the load when the fulcrum is two spots away from the load? • As the fulcrum moves farther from the load, is more or less force needed to lift the same load?
