I am delighted to share the news that Waldegrave was placed 8th best comprehensive school in the UK in The Times Parent Power List published today. Furthermore, our DFE P8 score, which was our best ever, placed us in the top 3% of all schools nationally, a figure that includes selective schools. Well done everyone! We couldn’t be more proud of our tremendous students and staff who made these achievements possible! This week our German A level students enjoyed a trip to the BFI for a workshop on the award winning film, Goodbye Lenin, which explores the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany. A group of Year 11 students have also attended Science Live in London, hearing from leading scientists including Professor Robert Winston and Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock. In school we welcomed Professor Mark Blagrove to talk to sixth form students about his fascinating research into sleep and dreams. Don’t forget tomorrow is our annual PTA Christmas Tree and Preloved Uniform sale. Pre orders via ParentPay have ended but you are in luck if you missed it as the PTA will have extra trees available for purchase on the day. Come along if you would like a real tree for Christmas!

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

JOINING THE PTA To get in contact with our PTA about joining the team please click below.

It is the time of year when respiratory and other seasonal viruses can spread quickly and easily. If your child has diarrhoea and/or vomiting or high temperature and is unwell, they should not attend school or mix with others outside of school, until they no longer have a high temperature, diarrhoea and/or vomiting for 48 hrs and are well enough to go back to school and other social activities. Click here for our guide on reducing the spread of infections. The consultation period for our updated Relationships and Sex Education Policy is now underway and the draft Policy is available to view on our website. If you would like to participate in a parent focus group to discuss the Policy, please complete this Google form expressing your interest.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9

It has been another exciting week at Waldegrave. Advent calendars have been passed around to forms to start this Friday, as we enter into December. A different student will be selected every form time to start the Christmas countdown. Congratulations to the Year 8/9 Basketball team who represented Waldegrave in the RSSP tournament on Wednesday and came runners up. We were in a pool with Twickenham and Grey Court, winning both games 6-0 and 8-4. This meant we faced SRRCC in the semi final and the team performed really well winning 11-4. The final was against last year’s top rivals Christ’s, which we sadly lost. However, the PE department was incredibly impressed with the level of effort and determination put into the matches. Well done to all who played, it was a great effort. Congratulations to Alex A, Marwah B, Karis C, Olivia D, Marielle EL R, Keira E, Lily F, Freda L, Eva MC. At the top of the Year 9 epraise leaderboard for this week we have 9EJO. Well done! They are closely followed by 9SPI. Congratulations to you all and keep up the good work. A reminder that our Year 9 PCM will be taking place on Wednesday 6 December. Coming up on 14 December we have the KS3 Christmas lunch taking place. This will also be Christmas Jumper Day. Students are given the opportunity to wear a festive jumper over their uniform and hopefully this will allow everyone to get more into the Christmas spirit! Christmas concerts will also be coming up soon. Well done to those students who have been busily rehearsing after school, we look forward to seeing this very soon! Finally, it appears that a lot of Year 9 students have lost or misplaced their locker keys. If needed please order new ones for your children via ParentPay, as we have a lot of coats and books going missing, due to students not having a safe place to store them.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

The Tattooist of Auschwitz - Heather Morris “I tattooed her number on her left hand, and she tattooed her number in my heart,” The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a true story which follows a Slovakian Jew who was imprisoned in the concentration camp Auschwitz in 1942 and fell in love with a girl whose number he tattooed. It’s a true story which follows themes of love, survival and hope as an unforgettable love story unfolds in the midst of an atrocity. I found it to be an extremely emotive, thought provoking and inspiring story which stays with you long after you turn the last page. It’s a very gripping and deeply disturbing novel which encapsulates the horrors of the holocaust and simultaneously sheds a light of comfort and hope; even in the darkest most tragic times, love and hope prevails. ~ Recommended by Marina M-B, Year 11 student

NOTICE FROM THE P.E. DEPARTMENT With the weather getting colder and wetter, the P.E. department would like to remind you that students should be wearing a different pair of trainers in their P.E. lessons to the black trainers they use as their school shoes. This is for health and safety reasons, as most fashion trainers do not have the correct support or grip for exercising and playing sport. Also, when taking part in activities on the field such as football or rugby, footwear can get very wet and muddy and this is also not comfortable or safe to be wearing for the rest of the school day. P.E. trainers can be any colour, but we just ask that they are proper sports trainers.
