A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 11

Last Friday, a group of 10 students from our Eco Committee attended the annual School Eco Conference at Holy Cross School in New Malden. The day had a packed schedule of speakers, presenters, student activities and games. This was a chance for our students to learn about environmental issues in a fun and interactive way, as well as being an opportunity to have their voices heard about their ideas for ways to mitigate further damage to the environment. On Monday and Tuesday Year 11 GCSE Art students completed their practical mock exam. We would like to congratulate them for their effort and engagement during this process. Today a group of Year 11 students attended the GCSE Science Live conference, where students heard lectures from academics across the three science disciplines - biology, chemistry and physics - as well as receiving exam hints and tips for their upcoming GCSEs. Well done to 11SPA who are in the lead with epraise points this week. They are closely followed by 11PON and 11PGC. Congratulations to Kate W in 11PON who has passed her Grade 8 Trumpet exam with a Distinction! What a remarkable achievement, well done. Next Monday we have external speakers presenting to Year 11 about the Cisco Degree Apprenticeship. I am sure Year 11 will find this very informative. Also on Monday the Year 11 GCSE PE students will be assessed in their Football skills and game play. All students involved and their parents have been contacted about this, we would like to remind students to bring appropriate Waldegrave PE kit (black shorts preferable) long socks, as well as shin pads and boots. Good luck to the U16 Basketball team who have two matches next week, on Tuesday against Christ’s and on Wednesday against Grey Court. We look forward to reporting on how they get on.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

The Tattooist of Auschwitz - Heather Morris “I tattooed her number on her left hand, and she tattooed her number in my heart,” The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a true story which follows a Slovakian Jew who was imprisoned in the concentration camp Auschwitz in 1942 and fell in love with a girl whose number he tattooed. It’s a true story which follows themes of love, survival and hope as an unforgettable love story unfolds in the midst of an atrocity. I found it to be an extremely emotive, thought provoking and inspiring story which stays with you long after you turn the last page. It’s a very gripping and deeply disturbing novel which encapsulates the horrors of the holocaust and simultaneously sheds a light of comfort and hope; even in the darkest most tragic times, love and hope prevails. ~ Recommended by Marina M-B, Year 11 student
