back of them means for keeping them in force by police and military power. Secretary Dern might be reminded that a good place to begin the practice of keeping solemn pacts is at home. When the reigning political party, to which the Secretary belongs, presented its platform to the American people four years ago, that platform described itself as a “ cove nant with the people, to be faithfully kept by the party when entrusted with power.” All the world knows how “ faithfully” that solemn “ covenant with the people” has been kept! Only two planks in the entire platform have been regarded; and, one of the two is the only one that should have been disregarded! Will a party platform ever again have the confidence o f .the great American people? “ Covenantbreakers” ! Referring to the nations of the earth, Secretary Dern is assuredly right— they have no sincere regard for their most solemn contracts with each other. Italy, for instance, signed a most solemn agreement in conjunction with more than half a hundred other nations, agreeing (1 ) not to make war oil a fellow League mem ber, and (2 ) to respect a fellow League member’s property, and (3 ) to.renounce war as an instrument o f national policy. What must we think as Italy, refusing to submit her trumped-up grievances to any real arbitration what ever, hurled herself upon an almost defenseless nation for pure spoil, and is. even now slaughtering the dusky children o f Ethiopia by the thousands? T o protesting nations, Mussolini replies that they will do well to consider their own conquests in the name of a “ superior civilization” ! David Lloyd George, who guided the British Empire through the dark days of the World War, recently said: The international situation is bad. W e are building up barriers against each other, putting up fences against each other, and restrictions against each other. We are blockading each other, and we are trying to starve each * other. Trade.is treated as if it were contraband. The atmosphere is poisoned with suspicion and distrust. W e have got covenants against war, we have' got pacts we have all signed that there shall be no more war, and we are spending more preparing for things that we have determined should never happen again.' Heedless of treaties, pacts, and promises, caring naught for the peace of the world, recognizing no authority except their own impetuous wills, Mussolini’s legions roll up the mountain slopes o f Ethiopia, Japan’s hordes sweep on over China’s defenseless walls, Hitler mails both his fists to pound everything beyond the borders of Germany into pulp, Russia daily adds extra tonnage to the great Jugger naut that she expects to roll over the whole earth in due season. The whole world is jittery. The prophetic cry that is to herald the sure approach of Armageddon— “Pre pare zvar” (Joel 3 :9)E-reverberates from mountain top to mountain top, from sea to sea, from Orient to Occident, and from pole to pole ! “ O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things?” (Dan. 12:8). The Word o f God does not leave us to doubt. When the “ trucebreakers” of earth shall assemble themselves at last, to determine which of their forces shall hold the dominion of the earth, then, the God that keepeth covenant shall send forth “ the Lion o f the tribe of Juda” (cf. Joel 3 ). The smoke of Armageddon will roll away. And, in the dawn of the day o f our God and His people, the “ bright and morning star” will shine forth gloriously! In the light o f that Star, even the Star o f Jacob, the nations shall, at last, ground arms, grasp hands in common brother hood, and find their way into the City o f Peace!

use for courts-. They apply their own wills. All that stands between you, Mr. American Citizen, and the tyranny of dictatorship— a Mussolini, or, perchance, a Hitler or a Stalin— is “nine old men” ! When they go, then, pull down your Goddess o f Liberty and bow the shackled knee! America may begin with a benevolent dictator, but dicta tors do not long' remain benevolent! Benevolent dictator; then, tyrannical dictator; then, Antichrist; then— thank God!— the “ rod out of the stem of Jesse” (Isa. 11:1), who “ shall break in pieces the oppressor” (Psa. 72 :4 ), judge in righteousness, and “ bring peace to the people” (Psa. 72:2,3) ! I ncreasing I nternational S uspicion ., The year 1935 witnessed a tremendous increase in in ternational suspicion and mistrust. Event after event compelled us to meditate upon our Lord’s answer to His disciples’ question: “ Tell.us, . . . what shall be the sign of thy coming, and o f the end of the world ?” (Matt. 2 4 :3 ). He said:, ‘‘ Then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another” (Matt. 24:10). Again, we were reminded o f the words of the Apostle Pau l: “ This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be . . . trucebreakers” (2 Tim. 3 :1 -3 ). The dictionary here on my desk defines “ truce” thus: “ A suspension of arms by agreement; armistice.” Now, a “ trucebreaker” would be any one who, as an aggressor, breaks the bonds o f peace and marches forth to make war. An idea, closely related, is expressed in the word “ convenantbreakers” (Rom. 1 :31). This sin of the nations in the time o f the end is, of course, closely allied with the sin o f lawlessness. Speaking at Honolulu, last October,' our own Secretary of War, Mr. Dern, said: We have been rudely awakened by events of the past two years, more particularly by the trend of recent months . . . Constitutions, statutes, laws and edicts are, in the long run, mere scraps of paper unless there is
