LESSON COMMENTARY [Continued from page 102]

In time, the beggar Lazarus died and went to Paradise. The rich man died, too, but he was carried away to a place sepa rated by an impassable gulf from God. How he longed now for help! He begged Abraham to send Lazarus to him to make him more comfortable. But it was too late. No one could pass over this gulf. But al ways the rich man could remember the time that he had wasted. And now it was too late! Objects: An old purse with holes in it, several small coins, a bank book, and a larger book, covered with silver paper, with the words, “ The Bank of Heaven” written on the outside. Lesson: Do you think it would be wise to put money in this old purse ? “No, it looks as if it would lo.se out.” We will try it and see. As soon as the purse is shaken a little, the money falls out through the holes. Do you think it would be safer to put the money in a bank, and have the banker record it in a bank book such as this one? “Yes. much safer.” What if I should keep putting money in this purse even after I knew that it had holes in it? “You would be very foolish.” Yes, I would be like the people of whom Christ spoke when He said: “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal” (Matt. 6:19). This is indeed good advice, isn’t it? Let us think! Is an earthly bank the best place to keep our treasures? N o! Even banks sometimes have to close their doors and are unable to return the money which has been given them. Here is another bank book. It reminds us of the Bank of Heaven. It is beautiful, isn’t it? The outside is pretty, but the in side looks better. I read: “ The unsearch able riches of Christ” (Eph. 3 : 8 ) ; “Heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ” (Rom. 8:17) ; “ Souls saved through gifts to the church and missions” ; “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart o f man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him” (1 Cor. 2:9 ). The Bank o f Heaven will never close. No thief can steal the treasures that are there. The man who places his money in a purse with holes in it is foolish indeed; but the man who has all his possessions in the banks of earth is almost as foolish. The wise man follows the advice Christ gave when He said: “Lay up for your selves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.” Object Lesson A S ure S av in g s A ccount

TABERNACLE PUBLISHING CO. 360-C North Waller Avenue Chicago, Illinois New Hymnals Highly Endorsed The Hope Publishing Company, Chicago, out of many years’ experience in publish ing hymnals and song books, has produced in its latest titles, The Service Hymnal and Devotional Hymns, two very appealing and widely adaptable books of sacred song. En t hus i a s t i c comments are being received from pastors and leaders from all parts of the country. For instance, a pastor in Big Run, Pa., writes to the presi dent of the Hope Publishing Company, as follows: “ I am not a musician, but a busy pastor who considers how such a book as The• Service Hymnal fits into his work. First, I looked for my favorite hymn. It was there, number 251. You have a wide variety of hymns for special days. Most books are short in this particular. I went over the records of my sermons preached since coming here last fall, and proceeded as if I were selecting the closing hymns for each service to fit the spirit of the con clusion of my sermon. I found only seven sermons for which the closing hymns were not in your book. All the other services had appropriate hymns without repetition. I also like your selection of responsive readings. Many books are wanting in this respect. You also include the Apostles’ Creed. Your arrangement of the hymns is logical and your topical index a great help to a busy pastor.” One unique feature o f The Service Hymnal which the pastor in Pennsylvania did not mention is the inclusion for the first time in any general hymnal of des cants for choir and congregation.
