APR IL 26, 1936 HOW TO CONQUER OUR FEARS 1 J o h n 4:18-21; I s a ia h 41:10 Meditation on the Lesson

is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city” (Prov. 16:32). “ Patience”—the rare grace, the Christ- like virtue. “ Let patience have her per fect work” (Jas. 1 :4). “Godliness” —, “ God-likeness.” “ Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect” (Matt. 5:48). “ Brotherly kindness,” “Be kindly affec- tioned one to another with brotherly love” (Rom. 12:10). “ Charity”B “love” (R .V .), the climax. “ Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God” (1 John 4:7). VI. None great, though earth it fill; But that is small that seeks its own, And great that seeks God’s will. Then hold my hand, most gracious God; Guide all my goings still; And let it be my life’s one aim To know and do Thy will. — A u th o r U n k n o w n . IV. L ivin g S tones When in your hard fight, in your tire some drudgery, or in your terrible temp tation, you catch the purpose of your being and give yourself to God, and so give Him the chance to give Himself to you, your life, a living stone, is taken up and set into the growing wall. Wherever souls are being tried and ripened, in whatever commonplace and homely ways, there God is hewing out the pillars for His temple. Oh, if the stone can only have some vision of the temple of which it is to lie a part forever, what patience must fill it as it feels the blows o f the hammer and knows that success for it is simply to let itself be wrought into what shape the Master wills ¡— P h il l ip s B rooks . V. “ T h ese T h in g s . . . in Y o u ” (2 Pet. 1:8). “Virtue”—courage, strength. “ Be strong in the Lord” (Eph. 6:10). “Knowledge”—“ That I may know him” (Phil. 3:10). “If any man willeth to do his [the Father’s] will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is of God” (John 7:17, R.V.). “Temperance” — self-control. “He that

There are “ fears” and “ fears” ; one is a “godly” fear, a most necessary emotion; the other a slavish fear, man’s worst foe. C. I. Scofield points out that the familiar Old Testament phrase, “the fear of the Lord,”1' has the meaning of reverential trust, with hatred of evil. “ The fear o f the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,” said the wise man, and we have proved it to be true. “What man is he that feareth the Lord? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose. His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth. The secret of the Lord is with them that fear him,” David declares in Psalm 25, and we long to enter into these promises. The “ fears” mentioned in our lesson today, however, speak of cowardice, trem bling anticipation of defeat or of punish ment, a slavish fear binding an individual’s heart and soul with shackles that he can not break unaided. To such as are in this bondage, the Apostle John comes with this assuring w ord: “ There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear”, (1 John 4:18). The one who knows Christ can say to a needy w orld: “Listen to me, all ye storm-tossed souls driven by fear o f poverty, of ridicule, of deserved judgment, o f the unknown future, I have the lifeboat which will bear you safely to harbor where no storms of fear will ever assail you. My lifeboat is redeeming Love.” Here is no fear. The lost one needs only to “climb in.” How then are we to conquer fear? W e need to remember the character and the J.
