UNSTO FROM UNCERTAINTY, BECOMING As a child, Dellavonte Hune (’22, ’23, ’24) wasn’t sure where he’d end up. Business Administration in Aviation. “I realized I loved learning, growing and pushing myself beyond what I thought was possible — and I’m not stopping now,” Hune said. As a Ph.D. candidate and published author, he’s well on his way to achieving his hard-fought success. He believes in giving back to his community and helping students dream big in the face of adversity. Hune credits three words with helping him through life’s challenges and carrying him through every moment of self-doubt: resilience, consistency and patience. “For anyone out there who feels like their dreams are out of reach — trust me, they aren’t. Keep pushing. Your story is still being written,” Hune encouraged.
Growing up in Madison, Wisconsin, he faced homelessness at 15. Hune bounced between friends’ sofas and a teacher’s home, even sleeping in his car a few times. “Stability felt like a luxury I couldn’t afford,” Hune remembered. But wherever he stayed, he found solace in writing. “At 20, I made a decision that would change my life forever — I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. The Marine Corps gave me the structure, discipline and sense of belonging I had been searching for,” Hune shared. “But when my time in the service came to an end, I found myself facing a new kind of challenge: Who was I without the uniform?” He knew education was the key to his future and chose Embry-Riddle because of its excellent reputation and top rankings for veterans. “Stepping into college while still serving wasn’t easy,” he reflected. “Thankfully, Embry-Riddle made that transition smooth.”
