Getting To Know The Zionsville PT Staff Brenn Lanham, Evening Receptionist ZPT The Newsletter About Your Health And Caring For Your Body February 2018

A brighter smile you may not find! Brenn is our evening receptionist, working part time after school, welcoming our evening patients and making cheerful reminder calls for next appointments. She joined our staff this past fall. Brenn is currently a senior at ZCHS, and is the youngest in a large family, some of whom Elaine met through church! She is a cheerful and thoughtful addition to our team, and we are happy to see her flourishing during her senior year. Q: Where did you grow up? A: Zionsville Q: Tell us about your family! A: I have a very big family consisting of my mother, Tracy, step father, Jim, brothers Brady and Brice, sisters Britt and Brianna, sister-in-law Hayley, and brother-in-law Bryan. A big family makes for fun get-togethers! Q: School activities? A: I am a part of the nationally recognized competitive show choir at ZCHS, in the mixed choir called Royalaires. I am also a small group leader for a group of 8th graders at Zionsville West Middle School through Campus Life. I like to stay involved in school activities; some of my favorite parts of high school have occurred while doing these activities. Q: Favorite food? A: Spaghetti Q: Pets? A: Two dogs, Marley and Finley Q: What do you enjoy doing during your spare time? A: I love photography. I try taking pictures every chance I get. Q: Unique fact, most people don’t know about you? A: I have been to Panama in Central America twice for missions work and will be going to Haiti with a school group this coming spring break to do more missions work! Q: What do you like most about working at ZPT? A: My favorite part about working at ZPT … my co-

workers. Everyone has such a great attitude and they were so welcoming from the start. We all have a lot of fun and I really enjoy being a part of the ZPT team! We love having you with us, Brenn! Things always get busy for our high school senior students, so we will keep all our ZPT family and friends posted regarding her competition show choir season, concerts, mission trip and future plans. Please stop in and meet Brenn in the evenings (while you shop at Kroger!)

ZPT GaZette The Newsletter About Your Health And Caring For Your Body

February 2018

Dear ZPT family and friends, Happy New Year! I am excited to report that I was a “good grandma” over the Christmas holiday! I had fun with 15 month old, Finn, as he toddled around our home, showing me

As for work, we have a couple newbies to introduce you to: students for the semester who will be learning more about what we do here in Private Practice PhysicalTherapy. They are inspiring us to be on our toes and remember why we all got into this field; it’s great to have students! Please stop in sometime and meet them. More about them in our next newsletter. Don’t miss some important invitations in this month’s ZPT Gazette, as we are planning a full day of Past Patient appreciation on February 20th. We are calling it a “Heart Wellness/Love our Patients” event, and you will read more about it in our insert. Because February is Heart Health Awareness month, and has Valentine’s Day in the middle, we combined them to give you a unique opportunity to get tested and heart-healthy. The other invitations are for workshops coming up in February. As we take a look at the new year, I cannot help but appreciate the people who made 2017 such a great year for us here at ZPT! Thank you everyone, for who you are and for the trust and encouragement you gave us. We hope to have returned it to you and made your life better. I like this quote from Jack Canfield: “By taking the time to stop and appreciate who you are and what you’ve achieved – and perhaps learned through a few mistakes, stumbles and losses – you actually can enhance everything about you. Self-acknowledgement and appreciation are what give you the insights and awareness to move forward toward higher goals and accomplishments.” As far as 2018 goes, I would like to leave you with a blessing: May your mind be clear and capable of learning and growing, may your heart be open and loving, may your body be strong and able to withstand another year of knocks and surprises, and may your spirit be filled to overflowing with joy.

"I could barely walk into this facility 3 months ago. I was having so much pain in my leg from my sciatic nerve. In the “gym” people were talking, laughing and joking as I was filling out allmypaperworkand I thought“they’re not serious about what they’re doing”. I was so wrong: the PT’s and the PT techs eased me into gentle exercises and within the first month I was doing so much better! The manual massage was also awesome and as I got better, they gradually increased the intensity and difficulty of my exercise routine. They also helped me learn how to adapt those exercises to do at home. I have work to do, but Marissa and all the staff have been great teachers. I’m now one of those people laughing and joking in the gym!” - Donna A.

what cabinets he can open and which objects on the tables he could reach. Kent and I gave him a cute little toy guitar for Christmas, to get him started on the music path. In addition, my son, Aaron and his fiance’ Genevieve were here from Portland, Oregon/Vancouver, Washington, with Genevieve’s daughter, Avary, who has recently turned 4 years old. They gladly hiked Eagle Creek Park, discovered the Ornithology Center, and went to the Children’s Museum with me so that I could be a kid again. Refreshing! Avary is a delightful little sweetheart who already has a strong will and a curious mind. We loved spending time with family and realized all too late that we didn’t take enough photos. The weather toward the end of Christmas week was not conducive to driving so we missed some of our nieces and their families, but certainly enjoyed catching up with Nate and Jenn, Mom and Ed, and Kent’s family – daughter Sarah and son-in-law, Tony (aka Finn’s parents), Kent’s sister, brothers, and one of our nieces. Jessica stayed in Bozeman, Montana, to work through the holiday season at a successful restaurant that she manages now; mom and I sent her a “care package.” On December 16th, my son, Nate, graduated from Butler University with his MBA. Working full time and attending classes in the evenings, having hours of homework and projects on the weekends, AND sacrificing some fun time in order to have enlightening learning experiences, Nate has completed a wonderful accomplishment. This is one proud mama! He continues to work in the field of engineering, in sales. His wife, Jenn, teaches physiology to college students. They are proud parents of two great danes, and live in Fishers.

Gratefully, Elaine

IS YOUR BALANCE SETTING YOU UP FOR AN INJURY?

I have some good news, and some bad news: First, the bad news: Everyone has naturally deteriorating balance skills; it’s just a fact of life. However, the rateofdeterioration, howquicklyyouworsen, andhowbadly thepoorbalance skills compound with other health issues CAN be under your CONTROL. (That’s part of the good news!) Good balance requires several things: Good vision (well-adjusted contacts or glasses if needed), quick reaction time, strong muscles in trunk and legs, good blood pressure, and a properly functioning vestibular/ inner ear system. Our brain must be tuned in and able to detect and quickly respond to changes of our body position, irregularities in ground surface, and the mere turn of our heads. Morebadnews:According to theCDC, fallsare the leadingcauseof fataland nonfatal injuriesamongadults65andolder.Fallscanbedevastatingandcan be deadly. Some of you might worry about yourself or your parents: when will we experience a fall, or….when will we fall again? No fun! Falling can be dangerous or embarrassing, throwing us down physically and emotionally. At worst, it can result in a fracture or head injury. So do we stop getting out and walking? Do we wear protective gear like the Michelin man or a helmet? Well, let’s keep the helmet for biking and roller skating. Let’s find something else we can CONTROL. More good news: Our bodies respond well to re-learning balance skills and to strengthening through specific, targeted exercises. Repeated challenges, in a safe environment, is helpful. No matter what age, young, middle, or old,

we all can improve our balance skills and strength. I promise. The logical way to begin, is to test yourself or to be tested. That’s where a great physical therapist comes in: we have a few standardized tests and a few tricky tasks up our sleeves to help get people thinking, learning and getting better. We actuallysee thisEVERYDAYatZPT. Ifyouareconcernedaboutyourbalance or a loved one’s safety, simply call our office and set up an appointment to see one of our therapists. After beginning, it can take several weeks to see progress, but it can also be an immediate “game-changer,” preventing a dreadful fall. If there are other factors, such as neurological changes, peripheral numbness, visual changes, we may need to refer you to another healthcare specialist to address these issues. We will be glad to steer you in the right direction. www.ZionsvillePT.com

Black Bean Mango Quinoa Salad

FOR BETTER “BALANCE” IN YOUR LIFE, EAT MORE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES! - Elaine

INGREDIENTS • 1 cup dry quinoa • 2 cups spinach • ½ cup cilantro • 3 green onions • ½ lemon, juiced

• 2 tsp. cumin • Sea salt and pepper to taste • 1 can (15 oz.) black beans, rinsed

• 1-2 mangos, cubed • 1 avocado, cubed

DIRECTIONS Prepare quinoa in rice cooker or on stove top according to package directions (I use vegetable broth, 2 cups to 1 cup quinoa). Let cool. In food processor, add the spinach, cilantro, green onions, lemon juice, cumin, salt and pepper. Process until smooth like pesto. Scrape sides, repeat. Add this sauce to quinoa soon after it cooks so that the quinoa absorbs all the flavor. Add black beans, avocado, and mango. Toss gently. (I squeezed rest of lemon on top to keep avocado from browning).

Heart Wellness Event: We LOVE our Patients A SPECIAL OFFER

Tuesday, February 20, 2018

Because February is Heart Health Month, and Valentine’s Day falls in February, plus we really do care for our ZPT family and friends, it follows that we would want to extend a special offer just for you. First, let’s discuss the seriousness of cardiovascular (heart and blood vessels) health. According to the CDC, nearly 1 in 3 deaths in the US each year is caused by heart disease and stroke. At least 200,000 of these deaths could have been prevented through changes in health habits, such as stopping smoking, more physical activity, and less salt in the diet; community changes to create healthier living spaces, such as safe places to exercise and smoke-free areas; and managing high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. When we see our patients here at ZPT we are often addressing pain, walking difficulties, joint stiffness or muscle weakness. We may not address the “elephant in the room” which could be … what have you done to stop smoking, to lose weight, to lower your blood pressure or cholesterol, or to push yourself to a higher fitness and activity level? We would like to do that NOW, this upcoming month of FEBRUARY. Just to give you plenty of time to prepare, we are setting aside Tuesday, February 20, 2018, for our Heart Wellness Event. SAVE THE DATE!

Here’s what we have planned….

Just for our past patients (all ages) and their immediate family and close friends, we will be performing Heart Wellness and Fitness Testing for you at NO CHARGE. Your 60 minute session will include: 1. Taking your blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, and blood oxygen level. (no needles, no blood, just external testing) 2. Testing your balance and general mobility, using standard tests such as Berg Balance Scale and Timed Up and Go. (see footnotes) 3. Cardio-specific testing such as the 6-Minute Walk Test or the Bruce Submaximal Treadmill Test. (see footnotes) 4. Functional Movement Screening – all or part of this test for assessing strength and flexibility. 5. Heart Healthy Snacks and Recipes to take home. 6. Information regarding Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Solutions, and Warning signs for Stroke and Heart Attack.

REQUIRED: registration by calling our office at 317.873.2033 OR e-mail us at ZionsvillePT@gmail.com so that we can contact you for an appointment slot. We will book these 30 minutes apart, but plan to be here for about an hour. We plan to start at 8 a.m. and finish by 6 p.m., so contact us right away to reserve your time! Footnotes: Berg Balance Scale is used to measure balance, using functional tasks such as sitting, standing, walking, turning, reaching and standing on one foot. T.U.G., or Timed Up and Go test is used to determine mobility and fall risk. It involves standing and walking a short distance then returning to sit. The 6 Minute Walk Test is used to determine functional walking capacity. How far can you walk in 6 minutes? The Bruce Submaximal Treadmill Test is used to predict VO2 max, or the efficiency of your cardiopulmonary systems by walking on a treadmill with increasing speed and grade for 12 minutes. This is best for some of our more competitive, athletic patients.
