A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12
This week has been a busy one for Year 12 as they continue to take part in their lessons and make the most of enriching extracurricular opportunities. Fashion and Art students are putting the final touches on their pieces for their practical exams, while Drama students performed a self-devised piece in a Promenade style, where the audience stands or follows the actors through their performance. This immersive and interactive performance drew positive comparisons with Punchdrunk, the theatre company that inspired it. On Tuesday, our Politics students had the opportunity to learn more about how Parliament works by visiting the Parliament Education Centre and the Supreme Court. This trip provided valuable insights into the workings of the UK government and the importance of active citizenship. In line with the upcoming general election, we have been providing our Politics students with opportunities to hear from local political candidates. Last Friday, Munira Wilson came to speak to Year 12 about her goals on both the local and national levels. She outlined the party’s promises across various areas and answered students’ questions on issues like knife crime, the economy, and the electoral system. On Thursday, students heard from Tom Bruce, the Labour candidate, who provided his perspective on these and other issues. Next week, Jonathan Roger Hulley, the Conservative candidate, will be visiting to speak to the students. Freya, a Year 12 Politics student, described these talks as “a really interesting opportunity that touched upon a lot of important issues, especially for young people like ourselves.” These talks are part of an ongoing effort to provide students with diverse political viewpoints and encourage informed civic engagement. We have many more exciting opportunities for Year 12 as we approach the end of the year, including a Bake Off, an inter-form tug of war competition, and a Sports Day.

BOOK OF THE MONTH
Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton
Some will recognise this title as a place in Macbeth, part of one of the witches’ deceiving prophecies to Macbeth. Fittingly then, this story, set in modern-day New Zealand, is all about the false promises of big business and the climate crisis. Following a group of ‘eco-warriors’ and their dealings with a deceitful billionaire over some precious land, it develops characters and relationships in a compelling way, building to a thriller-like conclusion. It’s unlike anything I’ve read recently; I’d really recommend it.
