Today the final A Level exam of the season was completed, with GCSEs finishing on Wednesday. The students have worked incredibly hard throughout the exams and can now enjoy celebrating a well deserved break from study. The sun has come out at just the right moment! This afternoon I am really looking forward to welcoming

our Year 13 students and families for our celebration assembly. As Year 13 leave, we are already in the process of welcoming our new intake for September. We had a very busy evening on Tuesday meeting our new Year 7 families. It was lovely to see many familiar faces in the audience, as well as meeting new members of the Waldegrave community. Katie and Hollie, Vice-Chairs of the Friends of Waldegrave and parents of students in Year 8, also introduced the vital work of our parent body. This weekend the Friends of Waldegrave are holding a Pre-Loved Uniform sale at school on Saturday from 10am. This is an opportunity to stock up on uniform at affordable prices. If you would like to support our work you can donate here, the funds raised make a huge difference to our students’ experiences. In the run up to the general election, we have some of our local candidates coming in to talk to our students. Last week Munira Wilson led a question and answer session with students, yesterday we welcomed Tom Bruce into school and next week it will be the turn of Jonathan Roger Hulley. I have been incredibly impressed by the insightful and thought provoking questions students have been asking in these discussions. Our A Level Politics students also had the opportunity to visit Parliament on Tuesday. Due to parliament being dissolved for the coming election students were able to access even more on the trip which really brought their studies to life.

In the news this week has been a worrying story about the impact of ‘Sextortion’ and other harmful online scams affecting young people. As the internet is an ever-changing phenomenon and young people are much more digitally engaged than their parents, carers and teachers, it can be challenging for us to know what the current and emerging risks are. The Internet Watch Foundation has an excellent blog detailing the types of harm that are common and how parents can help. They recommend the acronym TALK to parents as a structure: T alk about online sexual abuse A gree ground rules for how you use technology as a family L earn about the platforms and apps that your children love K now how to use the tools, settings and apps that can help keep your child safe online.
A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9
This week, Year 9 has been focusing on their gradual transition to Year 10 and the start of their KS4 career. Students had an assembly with myself and Ms. Dhir, where we emphasised the importance of resilience, especially in the lead-up to starting GCSEs and making option choices. We discussed various strategies to practise resilience in school. Ms. Dhir also introduced herself and outlined the expectations for KS4, as she will be taking over from Mr. Goulbourne, the current Head of KS3. Additionally, Ms. Dhir asked for volunteers for the Year 7 Culture Afternoon, and it was excellent to see many Year 9 students volunteer. Congratulations to the Year 9 and 10 rounders team who recently played a superb match against St. Richard Reynolds. The game ended in a win for Waldegrave with a score of 10-7. Top scorer Nanne V B V got 2 1/2 rounders and was player of the match. Other players scoring rounders were Maya T, Mabel MC, and Jasmine G. At the end of next week, we have Sports Day to look forward to. Students have been hard at work putting together their team sheets. We wish all the best to Franklin, Pankhurst, Seacole, and Eliot houses for a successful day. The annual ‘Drop Down Day’ is coming up in the next two weeks, and we hope Year 9 are excited about this opportunity. Students had the choice to pick between several exciting trips, including going on the London Eye and a river cruise, visiting London Zoo, exploring the London Dungeons, or going to the V&A museum.
Lastly, a reminder that students should be wearing lanyards at all times. If lost, they need to be replaced via ParentPay.

Away With Words by Sophie Cameron Away With Words is about a girl called Gala who has moved from Cataluña to a town in Scotland with her dad. She doesn’t speak much English, so she feels really lonely and lost, not able to be her usual funny self. This all changes when she befriends a girl called Natalie, who has selective mutism. They find their own ways to communicate, which improves their lives and the lives of others around them. In my opinion, Away With Words is a brilliant book because it gives meaning to a lot of phrases or sayings like, ‘having a way with words’ or ‘drowning in a sea of words’. It sheds light on a different view of words. Words are not just things that we say. They are things full of meaning and emotion, some more than others. Away With Words represents this and embodies the meaning of words. ~ Recommended by Ella B, Year 7
